The Xara Palace Relais and Châteaux is a luxury, boutique, family-run Hotel situated in the medieval, fortified city of Mdina. The history of The Xara Palace Relais and Châteaux, opened in 1999, is inextricably linked to that of Mdina, its walls forming part of the bastion walls that surround this hilltop city. Upon their arrival in Malta, the Knights of St John were granted Citta Notabile (Noble City) as Mdina was then known. The Xara Palace was built for Baroness Xara hence the name in 1624. She was a member of the Moscato Parisio family and was the first occupant of the Palace.
The architectural style is baroque. The Xara Palace was converted into a hotel in 1949 by Miss Mable Strickland. She was the daughter of a previous Maltese Prime Minister Lord Strickland and then a Member of Parliament leading her own political party. When the Zammit Tabona family purchased the property in 1995, the Palazzo was in a state of decline and it took 3 years to restore the building. The Zammit Tabona family bought the Palazzo with a vision to restore the building to its former glory, and to create a unique hotel experience to discerning visitors, which until now has been unavailable on the Maltese Islands.
The painstaking process of renovating the Palace began in late 1995, with the commissioning of local architectural and restoration specialists Architecture Project. Using original drawings and plans from the Government archives, they were able to carry out a sympathetic and historically correct restoration. The renovation was overseen by officials from the Department of Museums to ensure compliance with the laws for historic buildings. Such features as the Piano Nobile, the Atrium, and the Facade were reconstructed to be as close to the original designs as possible. The guest rooms were taken back to their original height, some of which are over 6 metres high.
This allowed the architects to include an innovative mezzanine floor in some of the suites. The interior design was overseen by Mrs Zammit Tabona herself. Today’s traveller will be pampered with every comfort, convenience and luxury while all the hotel staff will honour their commitment not only to meet their guest’s expectations but also to exceed them in every possible way. The Xara Palace Relais and Chateaux is located just a few metres from the main entrance of the walled historical city of Mdina and opened its doors to receive its first guests on the 1st May 1999. It caters for the individual traveller, mini groups as well as corporate travelers. As a guest you will have the privilege of staying in one of seventeen individually designed rooms which have unique features and are furnished with period pieces as well as original paintings by renowned Maltese and international artists.
