Western Rivers Lodge is located in the beautiful Maruia river valley in the spectacular southern alpine area of the South Island of New Zealand. Our remote location is 5 km north of the small village of Springs Junction on the main inland route between the cities of Christchurch and Nelson. The lodge is situated at the headwaters of four blue ribbon trout rivers, the Maruia, Grey, Lewis and Inangahua and within an hours drive from the lodge we have access to no less than 45 different rivers, streams and creeks. Together with helicopter fly outs to remote wilderness rivers we have access to a total of 260 miles of New Zealand’s finest trout water. Our unique location enables us to fish on a far greater number of rivers than any other lodge in New Zealand.
These magnificent wild mountain rivers offer the classic fly fishing experience - spotting and sight casting to trophy brown trout in crystal clear water. An average trout from our rivers is over 5 pounds with many in the 6-8 pound class and plenty over the "trophy" 10 pounds. Anglers enjoy vast stretches of water all to themselves, walking the riverbanks and casting into picture perfect riffles, runs and pools. A combination of our drive out fishing with optional helicopter wilderness trips provide the ultimate fly fishing experience
The lodge which is set in 7 acres of native bush and gardens is north facing for all day sun and spectacular views down the Maruia valley and Victoria range beyond. Our guests are accommodated in private chalets with en suite bathrooms and spacious well appointed bed and living areas. The two queen-size beds are extremely comfortable and combined with our quiet location ensure an excellent nights rest. After the fishing day relax on the veranda to enjoy the views and the company of the inquisitive locals - Bush Robins and Fantails, just some of the native birds that are attracted to the garden.
All meals are enjoyed in the main lodge which comprises the comfortable lounge, bar and dining room. Savour the aromas from Ali’s kitchen as you gather at the bar for appetizers, pre-dinner drinks and the days fishing tales. With ready access the finest quality fresh meats, seafood and vegetables that New Zealand is renowned for, Ali will prepare exquisite meals which give classic cuisine that "Kiwi" touch. Lamb and venison, scallops, mussels and salmon served with salad greens and herbs fresh from the garden will appear on the menu which changes daily. Any special dietary requests can be catered for, just let us know. New Zealand’s reputation for wines of excellence is known worldwide and we have a selection of fine NZ wines to complement our menus. Try a famous Marlborough sauvignon blanc with pan seared scallops, cucumber and mint salad. Fresh fruit and cereals, warm croissants, toast and local preserves are available for breakfast or if preferred a fully cooked breakfast will prepare you for the days fishing.
