Dating from the late 1600’s, the castle combines the elegance of a Regency country house with Victorian gothic - complete with castellations and turrets. The interiors have been lovingly preserved, with ornate gold leaf ceilings, open fires and family portraits throughout. The Turret suite is set on three floors, with a circular sitting room, bedroom and a bathroom complete with a Victorian rain bath.
All rooms enjoy sweeping views over the gatehouse, parkland or gardens. There is a fallow deer herd in the park, and a chain of five lakes and woodland. The four acre walled garden has been recently restored and now produces flowers, fruit and vegetables for the hotel. The converted Georgian stables are home to an award winning cookery school, run by the celebrated TV chef Rosemary Shrager. The castle is surrounded by the family’s 20,000 acre estate, stretching from the River Ure up onto the Yorkshire Dales, estate tours of the Wensleydale scenery, local attractions and cottage industries are available.

The spa town of Harrogate and Harlow Carr gardens are 15 miles away, and the historic walled city of York (with Castle Howard nearby)and Leeds (with Harewood House nearby)are both 35 miles away.
