This lodge lies between the Poás and Barva Volcanoes at 6200 feet above sea level on the ridge dividing the Atlantic and Pacific zones of the country. The lodge is nestled into the rolling pastures, at the foothills of Poás Volcano, one of the world's largest active craters.
The impressive views from the house include not only the volcano, but also the western area of the spectacular Braulio Carrillo National Park as well as the Caribbean plains and even the Caribbean Sea. The lodge is just a few meters from the nearest protected subtropical rain forest area, through which a network of trails has been designed for visitors to explore and see its birds and extensive flora.
The lodge itself was built by an English family, as the principal house for the surrounding dairy farm, El Cortijo, both of which they still own. Poas Volcano Lodge is a unique eco-tourist lodge set within a working dairy farm close to Poas Volcano National Park and the extraordinary Waterfall Gardens. The luxury rustic flavour complements the surrounding landscape of lush virgin cloudforest.
We are well into rebuilding the main building of the Lodge and are slowly defining our future. The Vara Blanca area has seen a huge transformation in its infrastructure due to the enormous effort CONAVI (part of the Ministry of Transport) are investing into the road system. Just between Los Cartagos and Cariblanco there have been some 400 units working, be they dump trucks, excavators, bulldozers and back hoes. They have removed millions of tons of soil and created huge terraces along the route. It is unlikely they will finish opening a route to the Caribbean this year, but they have promised to open the road and keep it open, for traffic as far as the La Paz Waterfall Gardens.
The Gardens opened last June 2009. In 2010 we will hopefully see a road to San Miguel and Sarapiqui/San Carlos open for traffic built by ICE for its reconstruction of the high voltage lines damaged in the earthquake. Recently the Government has expressed its determination to rebuild the road through Cinchona during this year and next , as the construction of Nueva Cinchona and the need for access by the El Angel factory, as well as the importance of route 126 for the alternative access for Braulio Carrillo , make this a high priority.
This means that the main attractions for your guests locally, will be available and we will play our part in accommodating them. Our trails are open, the dairy can be viewed, and we will have the main lodge building with all its services available for July 2010. There will be 5 Master Suites, the games room, a library, a yoga and wellness room, a small cinema, wireless broadband, TV, the restaurant, a bar, Jacuzzi tubs in two of the suites, and three suites with great views of the volcano.
There will be an open fireplace, and the Master Suites, library and restaurant will include wood-burning stoves for the cooler weather. We are very pleased with the way the Lodge is evolving and it will be a notable green building. We have recycled a great amount of the original house and used oak wood which had to be felled due to the earthquake repairs of the roads. The building will be 50% larger than the original one and rebuilt as a hotel, but with the same personality.
