Mayan Ruins: Our tour starts with a 3-hour drive up the Hummingbird Highway to the Cayo, Belize's most Western district. The Hummingbird is considered to be the most scenic drive in Belize, as it winds its way through the Maya Mountains. On our journey we will pass many small villages as well as the nation's capital, Belmopan, and the bustling market town of San Ignacio, which sits high above the Macal River. We stop here to view the ruins of Cahal Peche, which have been partially restored and provide excellent examples of classic period structures. You will enjoy lunch at one of a selection of restaurants along the way. Our journey continues West and brings us within a mile of the Guatemalan border. Here we will cross the Macal River in a hand cranked ferry to access the large Mayan site known as Xunantinich (shoo-nan-toonich). This fascinating ruin has several plazas and a large selection of classic period structures. Those ambitious enough to hike to the top of El Castillo, the tallest structure on the site, will be rewarded with panoramic views of Belize and Guatemala.
Reef Snorkel: We begin our journey with a tour through the Belize Cayes and proceed through the cayes to the barrier reef. The Belize Barrier Reef is the longest unbroken barrier reef in the world, stretching some 200 miles, spanning the entire length of Belize. See a multitude of coral formations and swim amongst a wide variety of brilliantly colored tropical fish on this full day of snorkeling and swimming adventure. Your guide will make several stops along the reef enabling you the opportunity to snorkel in warm, crystal clear waters filled with a multitude of fish and coral. Your guide will swim along with you and point out the many sea creatures that inhabit this massive reef system including lobsters, eels, nurse sharks and several varieties of rays.
Jaguar Preserve Hiking: After breakfast we set out from the Lodge and proceed through pristine wetlands on our way to the Southern Highway. On most days the air will be clear enough to see the majestic spire of Victoria Peak (3,675 ft.) and the distant Maya Mountain Range. We soon arrive at Maya Center and the entrance to the Cockscomb Basin Jaguar Preserve. We stop briefly to sign in and to view the beautiful hand-carved slate plaques, baskets, clothing and jewelry made in the village by the local Mayan Indians. We then continue into the dense tropical rain forest of the Cockscomb Basin, which has a total protected area of over 100,000 acres. Your guide will then take us on an established trail and as you walk, the guide will interpret the flora and fauna that makes this park such an amazing place. The preserve is believed to have the world's highest density of Jaguar as well as several other cat species. You will end your trip with a hike up to a beautiful waterfall and natural pool where a quick dip will provide a refreshing experience.
Birds of Paradise: We depart the Lodge at daybreak and drive a short distance to "Toucan Sittee", a small guest house located on the Sittee River. The drive will take you to areas where they are large trees that attract many species of birds including aracari, parrots, toucans and parakeets. Toucan Sittee borders the Sittee River where there are many large trees known to attract birds. As you view the bird life here you will be served a delicious breakfast consisting of fresh fruit, juice, coffee, and fresh baked breads. We will make our way through Sittee River Village to the site of the Serpon Sugar Mill ruins. The trail down to the Sittee River will take us through pristine rain forest, across several small streams and past giant stands of bamboo. The river is home to many species of birds, so you will want to stop here to observe the proliferation of bird life that abounds in this area.
Jungle Horseback Riding: Our tour begins with a brief ride through a fragrant orange grove. Then the trail takes us into the mysterious greenery of the tropical rain forest. A new world envelops us as we ride under the canopy of vine-entangled palms accompanied by the call of exotic birds. 350 different species of birds have been counted in this area which is directly adjacent to the Cockscomb Basin Jaguar Preserve.
Caves Branch River Tubing: This amazing tour begins with a two hour drive up the Hummingbird Highway and originates at Caves Branch which is an area well known for its many caves and limestone mountains. Here we will acquire our inner tubes and headlights and proceed down a path to the Caves Branch River. The 30 minute hike takes you through the rain forest and is full of interesting sites. A tour guide will explain the flora and fauna that you encounter on your way to the the river. Once at the river, we begin the floating part of our adventure and during the next hour or so will drift slowly down the river entering and exiting several huge caves. These caves are fascinating geological formations and contain several species of cave dwelling animals including cave spiders and bats. At the finish of this tour through the depths of the earth you will be treated to a delicious barbecue lunch.
