Via the narrow country lane cutting through Bali's beautiful rice fields, the glow of giant orange lanterns is visible through Villa Tugu's lush foliage. Two Ganesha statues greet us outside the main entrance, and the gate opens to an impressive driveway surrounded by an extensive carpet of grass, travelers palms, flamboyant trees and pink bougainvillaea trees. Somewhere along this driveway, time seems to slowly stop, and one is transported to another world—a world of surreal romance; a Balinese artful interpretation of the tales of the 1001 Nights, or the Midsummer Night's Dream.
An unassuming Balinese limestone gate hides the world of wonders behind it. Following the gate is a wooden bridge above a pond of wild blooming lotuses, a cast of Wayang Kulit leather puppets guide the way, their shadows distorted by the light behind them. The spacious living areas present plush living areas of cushions, decorated with beautiful arts from different part of Indonesian history, giant exotic lanterns, and vast tropical gardens. White-walled tradition of minimalist decor is defied; instead it is bold colors that gives a contemporary edge to the ancient art: ultramarine and emerald, deep cranberry, with diaphanous chiffon drapes in shades of purple and boudoir-pink. Bounded by sweet-scented frangipani and low hedge of coral fountain, a beautiful iron wood dining table is set for twelve on the open verandah. The cicadas have finished their day and the frogs take their shift, chorusing over to the swimming pool. Flanked by flaming torches, the pool is reminiscent of a deep turquoise lake overflowing into infinity. It is guarded by a pair of magnificent, giant, hundred-years-old mythological horses; dragon-like, seeming to about to lower their heads and take a drink from the pool. Magical evenings under the stars to take place under the towering horse shoe-shaped pergola, dripping in white thunbergia and lit by the cylindrical giant orange lanterns that has glimpsed earlier through the canopy of sea-hibiscus trees. Villa Tugu is a magical place for romantic wedding receptions and parties under the stars, whether for 205 guests or 300 guests. It can also be combined with a beautiful sunset ceremony and cocktail at Hotel Tugu's beach wedding lawn facing the Indian Ocean, followed by romantic dinner at Villa Tugu.
