Description of the Trimix Course:
What is Trimix? This Program is designed for those individuals already involved in deep diving activities. Trimix affords a safer means for deep-water exploration for divers who must dive deep or perform with a clear head at the intermediate depths. The IANTD Trimix Diver Program establishes the need to be self -sufficient/reliant
Trimix means a mix of three components ("tri" and "mix"), and usually when people talk about trimix, they mean the mix of oxygen, nitrogen and helium. Trimix is used in very deep dives instead of air to reduce the partial pressure of oxygen (to avoid oxygen toxicity) and nitrogen (to avoid nitrogen narcosis). Trimix is also being used as travel gas or deco gas, depending on the situation.
The percentages of gas components vary depending on the dive. As one goes deeper, there will be less oxygen and nitrogen, and more helium.
Trimix mixes are labeled for example as "Trimix 10 50" or "Trimix 10/50", where 10 represents the percentage of oxygen in the mix, and 50 is the percentage of helium.
Terms for different trimix gases and labels:
- Hyperoxic trimix: Oxygen content is more than 21%.
- Normoxic trimix: Oxygen content is 21%, same as air has .
- Hypoxic trimix: Oxygen content is less than 21%.
- Heliair is a mixture of helium and air (HELIum-AIR). Heliair contains always less oxygen than air (in percentage, so heliair has less than 21% oxygen).
Prerequisites:
- Must be qualified as a Technical Diver or Technical Cave Diver or Technical Wreck Diver or Normoxic Trimix Diver or equivalent.
- Must provide proof of a minimum of 200 logged dives, of which at least 25 were to depths between 39 meters and 60 meters.
- ~ Minimum age: 18 years old
Course Outline:
- Dives. Minimum of 200 minutes of open-water run time completed within three Trimix dives to depths between 50 meters and 79 meters. All depths must be worked towards incrementally, with no increase greater than 12 meters from one dive to the next. One dive must be to at least 60 meters or deeper
- Lectures. Theory will be covered between dives. Pre reading will help the smooth running of the course.
- Equipment. Recommended twin 10/12 cylinders with manifold (preferably with Isolator). Regulators: two First stages, two second stages, (one regulator to have long (1.5 to 2m) hose.) one SPG, two LP power inflators. Redundant (twin bladder)
- BC with appropriate lift. (If a dry suit is used it can be considered to be emergency BCD flotation). Two means of recording depth and time. (Computers or bottom timers)
-Note: Air computers can be used but may “bend” on the longer dives where high EANx or O 2 is used. Minimum two dive slates. Deco Cylinder – Min 7L with O2 clean Regulator (300 bar NOT Recommended).
- Travel Gas Cylinder – Min 7L (preferably 10l) with O 2 clean Regulator (300 bar NOT Recommended). Red Delayed Marker Buoy & Yellow Signaling Buoy.
