Relax into the refreshing rhythm of nature by combining the joys of whitewater rafting and camping on this trip. The Upper New River is a beautiful canyon composed of calm pools and relatively mild rapids (Class I - III). The rapids are mainly long chutes dropping gently over ledges interspersed with expanses of calm water. Some rapids on this section are: Grassy Shoals, Grandview, The Ledges, or Silo. Minimum age for this trip is 6.
On the Upper New River double duckies (inflatable kayaks) are the favored way to paddle down the river. Duckies are maneuverable and agile while providing a one-on-one experience with the river. A 'lunch raft' often accompanies the trip.
What to Expect:
Arrive at Class VI to a complimentary reception of Starbuck's coffee and juice in Chetty's Pub. Chetty's offers an assortment of a' la carte breakfast items.
Check-in with your Trip Leader and fill out release forms (minors unattended by legal guardians must bring a signed Class VI release form day of trip).
Change into your river wear, pack your gear into our dry bags, grab a life jacket and helmet, then load up and head for the river. The Fun Director will introduce themself to you and throughout the trip, will lead the kids (and any playful adults) in a variety of fun & educational activities, both on and off the water. Water play, Appalachian ghost stories, short nature hikes, songs around the campfire, reading and jewelry making are just a few of the activities kids may choose to enjoy.
All gear and food for the trip are carried with the trip in a supply raft.
Approximate 45 minute bus ride to put-in depending on water levels.
On route or at put-in, your trip leader and guide deliver a safety talk covering the fundamentals of rafting and proper use of river equipment.
Enjoy our deli-style lunch part way down the river.
Late afternoon, pull over and set up camp alongside the river, while your guide prepares dinner. The kids will enjoy a meal prepared especially with their tastes in mind or they may join the adult meal also.
The next morning after breakfast, you'll break camp, load the gear and head down river.
At the take-out point, the gear is loaded onto our vehicles and we head back to Class VI while enjoying a complimentary beverage.
Back at Class VI enjoy a hot shower (don't forget your towel), shop at our Canyon Rim Store, take a stroll to our scenic overlook and enjoy a buffet dinner at Smokey's On The Gorge - all located at Class VI's canyon rim facility.
