This has become one of our most popular trip combinations. Start your adventure with a mild introduction to white water with Class I-III rapids on the Upper New river. Partner up and enjoy the tandem challenges of a double ducky. You'll feel and learn how the river moves beneath you and become acquainted with river terminology, such as downstream current, eddies, wave trains, and calm water. Your adventure continues on the second day as you head to the Lower New River in rafts. Sporting rapids from Class I-V you'll once again be challenged by faster currents, stronger eddies and bigger wave trains and calm water for floating or swimming. Two thumbs up for this trip!
One of the oldest rivers in North America, the New River flows through a rugged canyon up to 1300 feet in depth exposing rocks as old as 330 million years while passing through an area rich in coal mining history. Squeezing down between rugged mountains, the river alternates from rapids to pools perfect for swimming. What to Expect: Covering approximately 15 miles of the Upper New River takes about six to eight hours from the time of arrival and return to Class VI's canyon rim facility. The bus ride to and from the river takes approximately 45 minutes to travel in either direction, depending on water levels and access points. Covering up to 16 miles of the Lower New River takes about six to eight hours from the time of arrival and return to Class VI's canyon rim facility. The length of the trip will vary with water levels. The bus ride to the put-in takes about 45 minutes while the return ride from the take-out lasts ten minutes. Upon arrival at Class VI, a staff member greets you at our check-in location. During the check-in process, each participant is required to sign our release form prior to each raft trip. Minors unattended by legal guardians must bring a signed Class VI release form. After signing the release form, changing into river wear, and enjoying a complimentary reception of Starbuck's coffee and juice in Chetty's Pub, we get a life jacket and helmet, then load up and head for the river. (Chetty's Pub also offers an assortment of a' la carte breakfast items.) At the put-in on the river, your trip leader and guide deliver a safety talk covering the fundamentals of rafting and proper use of river equipment. Instructions and demonstrations are also provided on how to paddle the duckies. Part way down the river, we pull off for a wholesome, riverside deli-style lunch. At the take-out point, the gear is loaded onto our vehicles and we head back to Class VI while enjoying a complimentary beverage. You can take a hot shower, change into dry clothes, shop at our Canyon Rim Store, take a stroll to our scenic overlook and dine at Smokey's On The Gorge - all located at Class VI's canyon rim facility.
