North Platte River:
Large, spectacular bluffs and wide-open western vistas border this crystal clear river. Canoeing in Wyoming, you'll find the wildlife plentiful. It is not uncommon to encounter deer, antelope, blue herons, Canadian geese, a flock of white pelicans and bald eagles in one mellow afternoon on the river. Fishermen will find this to be one of the best trout fishing streams in the West. So don't forget to bring your fishing pole! (Wyoming fishing license required.)
The area is also rich in the romance of the Old West. You will cross the historic Overland Trail, the wagon trail to the West. In this wilderness area, even the wagon wheel ruts are still visible in the dirt after all these years. After hiking past pioneer rock art on the canyon walls, you'll visit a pioneer graveyard on the overlying bluffs. One can only imagine how they died. The North Platte River is truly a trip back in history!
In addition, the resort town of Saratoga, WY, is well known for its Hobo Hot Springs, which are open to the public at no charge.
White River:
When you canoe Utah, you won't soon forget it. The White River, flowing westward 31 miles from Bonanza, Utah, near the Colorado and Utah border, has been referred to as the best canoeing in Utah. It is certainly the most remote wilderness area of any flat-water river stretch in the West. Few boaters have discovered the wild and secluded beauty of a Utah canoe trip through the White River Canyon. Wildlife abounds including wild horse herds, antelope, deer and beaver. Fantastic hiking awaits you at the unusual geologic formations of Goblin City. Before or after your trip, you may wish to hike into Fantasy Canyon or Devil’s Playground, featuring other unique rock formations. The water on the White River is generally smooth with occasional rapids up to Class II in difficulty. Excellent camping is found in the cottonwood groves along the river.
Yampa River:
Canoe the Yampa River, the last undimmed tributary of the Colorado River system. This enchanted river in northwestern Colorado gently meanders through a remote area teeming with wildlife, colorful vegetation and Indian pictographs. Relaxation is the keyword while camping along the lush open meadows and high-walled canyons through this 34-mile river stretch between Craig, CO and Duffy Mountain. Plus, you have a good chance of seeing wildlife: deer, antelope, hawks and both bald and golden eagles. This is the most gentle of the rivers we paddle...canoeing in Colorado has never been better!
