We are in a two (2) bear per each licence area, that means that each hunter is eligible to bag (2) black bears. Alberta is estimated to have between 60 – 80 thousand black bear and we hunt in the Northeast WMU 517 and 519. The area is just north of the Cold Lake Air Weapons Range, which is a 1,700 square mile game preserve with no hunting. By hunting the area north of the Weapons Range, we are assured of a great number of mature bears. The average bear in Alberta is between 5 – 5 ½ feet nose to tail. Our average is between 6 – 6 ½ feet nose to tail and we have killed bear over 8 feet nose to tail (these monsters weigh between 450 – 600 lbs. and they are bigger than most mountain Grizzlies). This is really trophy hunting! You can hunt wolf and coyote on all of our hunts and these can be great trophies.
The hunting style is over baits and for the archery, rifle or black powder hunter, this method has proven successful. Most of the archery stands are between 15–25 yards and most rifle shots are around 20-50 yards. We use ground blinds in some areas. We do get to stalk some bears when the clover starts to grow. Full camouflage is required for the archery hunters and it is better for all hunters. Although we are not an archery only outfit, we meet all the needs of archery hunters. We provide archery targets to keep you 'sighted in' and portable tree stands, if the permanent stand is too far away from the bait. We take Pope & Young bears every spring and 5 bears measured over 20 inches in 2005. These are big bears!
Our camp consists of several 12’ x 14’ high wall tents all having both wooden floors and bunks. There are a maximum of four (4) hunters per tent. The cook tent is 12’ x 20’ on a wooden floor. All the tents have wood burning heaters in them. These tents are very spacious and in bad weather, you are high and dry off the ground. There are electric lights in each tent and we have pressure hot water shower system in each camp. We try to have no more than 6 hunters in each camp, but to accommodate special requests, we are glad to add an extra hunter. We provide a very comfortable rustic wilderness camp.
