2006 Canoe Trips:
(1) June 10 - 20 (11 days). A taiga-tundra trip on two rivers beginning south of tree line, and then crossing tree line to tundra. Second half of trip on tundra. Route consists of various sized lakes joined by short stretches of river. Very few rapids. Three portages. Eskers and miles of spectacular, white, sandy beaches. Moose, wolves (2 wolf dens), black bear, muskoxen and grizzly, waterfowl (ducks, geese, loons), bald eagles, boreal and tundra birds. Superb fishing for large lake trout, northern pike and grayling.
(2) June 24 -July 4 (11 days). 170 miles(max.)on extremely remote tundra river and its tributary. 98% river paddling. Considerable number of easy rapids. No portages. Wide variety of plant communities, wildlife and spectacular scenery. Profuse wildflowers. Rich wildlife featuring muskoxen, wolves (8 wolf dens), moose and grizzly. Large numbers of geese, ducks, swans, loons (4 species), arctic terns, jaegers, ptarmigan, etc. Also peregrines (many active eyras), gyrfalcons, rough legs, eagles. Fair fishing for lake trout and grayling.
(3) July 8 - 18 (11 days). 140 miles (max.) on extremely remote white-water tundra river. 100% river paddling. No portages. Very hilly terrain. Abundant wolves and caribou (good chance of seeing tens of thousands of caribou). Also muskoxen, grizzlies and wolverines. Good tundra birdlife. Superb wildflowers. Mediocre fishing for lake trout and grayling.
(4) July 22 - August 1 (11 days). 165 miles (max.) on remote tundra river. 75% river paddling. Some small lakes and rapids. Four portages. Spectacular variety of scenery, vegetation and wildlife. Eskers. Rich wildlife including caribou, muskoxen, wolves (3 wolf dens), moose and grizzly. Reasonable chance of seeing tens of thousands of caribou. Also geese, ducks, loons (4 species), peregrines (active eyras), gyrfalcons, bald eagles, arctic terns, jaegers, ptarmigan, etc. Good fishing in places for lake trout and grayling.
(5) August 5 -15 (11 days). A tundra river and its tributary. Mostly river paddling; some small lakes. Rapids early in trip. Four portages. Wide variety of tundra scenery including huge sandy eskers, sand dunes and beaches. Caribou (usually abundant every day), muskoxen, wolves (3 wolf dens), moose, grizzly, geese, falcons, bald eagles and many other tundra birds. Excellent grayling and lake trout fishing in some places.
(6) August 19 -31 (13 days). Route follows two smaller rivers through predominantly tundra country close to tree line. Route consists of small to large sized lakes joined by short stretches of river. Virtually 100% flat-water paddling. Some short portages. Very hilly terrain, sandy eskers and beaches. Northern lights. Scattered caribou usually seen daily. Also muskoxen, wolves, moose, grizzly, loons, ducks, geese, bald eagles. Good fishing for lake trout and grayling.
