If you like the idea of spending a summer weekend viewing spectacular coastlines, rocky headlands, verdant forests and sandy beaches while paddling through the crystal clear waters of Lake Superior in the company of an experienced wilderness guide, this is the trip for you!

Over our two day sojourn onto Lake Superior, we will enjoy landscapes carved from 10,000 years of wind, water and time, deep green boreal forests with rare Arctic disjunct plants and possibly a wide variety of wildlife including moose, fox, beaver and otters. We may even be fortunate enough to see woodland caribou and peregrine falcons.

Your trip begins from our Rock Island Lodge site adjacent to the protected waters at the mouth of the Michipicoten River. On Friday afternoon, we offer an instruction session for novice paddlers. Paddlers with basic skills, wet exit and group rescue experience may join us for the Saturday/Sunday trip without taking part in Friday’s instructional session.

On Friday evening, just prior to a delectable whitefish barbecue dinner, we will discuss details of our upcoming trip. Depending on the Lake conditions and guide/group discussion, the locations we may venture to could include:

Old Woman Bay to Rock Island - Gargantua Harbour area - Mijin Lake area - Dore River to Rock Island - Sinclair Cove area.

Trip distances range from 10 – 25 km and the group sets our pace, but we tend to spend most of the day on the water at a relaxed pace, leaving lots of time for “covering the distance” and exploring the coast. The lake is mostly calm in summer, but when it gets rough we enjoy the view from shore, so experience paddling in surf and swells is not necessary.

You will be responsible for carrying a portion of the group gear, as well as your tent, sleeping bag and personal gear in your kayak. Once we’ve reached our group campsite for the evening, your experienced guides can assist you with setting up your tent. Then explore some more, by foot or kayak, enjoy the afternoon sun in the company of a good book, or chat with the new friends you've made on your trip.

Your guides have advanced wilderness first aid, sea kayak paddling and sea kayak guide course certifications. They know and love Lake Superior and want to share their knowledge with you. Your safety is their primary concern. They are also wonderful wilderness chefs and "on trip" meals are healthy, fresh and delicious. No freeze-dried food here! We can also accommodate most special diets.

Tents are provided for the weekend and beach tent sites and yurts are available Friday evening as well. You might prefer to book Friday night in our Rock Island Lodge, where we have 4 comfortable rooms with private washrooms. Trip participants enjoy a discount on lodge accommodations and in our paddling shop. Advance reservations are usually required.

We Provide: Professional instruction and guiding; Dinner on Friday evening, all meals on Saturday and breakfast, lunch and snack on Sunday, 4 season dome tents (double or single occupancy) foamie sleeping pads; group safety, camping, cooking, eating and sanitation gear; shuttles, park fees, dry bags, fully outfitted expedition sea kayaks, farmer John/Jane wetsuits and paddling jackets.

You Provide: Personal gear, sleeping bag and a sense of adventure. A more detailed list provided on registration.

This is a wonderful trip for folks wanting an introduction to sea kayak paddling and camping on Lake Superior. The typical route follows the more remote northern section of Lake Superior Park and finishes at our Rock Island lodge at the mouth of the Michipicoten River. Join us this summer.
