CRCA Level One Kayak Course. This course will assist students in preparing for high industry standards in judgment and leadership, accountability, environmental responsibility, teaching techniques and progression, and personal paddling skills. Whether used as a stepping stone toward professional guiding/instructing, or otherwise planning to be responsible for the safety of others on the water, this training will establish a foundation for further leadership involvement. We will use a combination of single and double kayaks and incorporate TASK (Trade Association of Sea Kayaking) guidelines for tour operators.
Guides Course (CRCA Levels I & II). Taught by Alan Stanley and Tim Nicholls, this course is designed to prepare you for employment in the sea kayak guiding industry. The course follows the guidelines of the CRCA (Canadian Recreational Canoe Association) and your skills will be recognized across Canada. Upon completion, you will have mastered leadership skills, weather assessment, group dynamics, trip planning, and basic navigation. In addition, you will receive CRCA Flatwater, Level One or Level Two Skills and First Aid and CPR certification. All Outside Expeditions staff are required to participate in this course. You MUST have a wetsuit and warm clothing - immersion is part of the course and essential to improving your skills! Meals are included on the camping portion (from lunch on Day Three to lunch on Day Five), and all equipment is included. Bring your own lunch for the day sessions and we provide dinner on Day One and Two. Expect to have instruction from 9:00 am until 7:30 or 8:00 pm, with breaks for lunch and supper. Notes: This course takes place in early season, and temperatures are always cool. Remember that you must dress for the water temperature, not the air temperature! Wetsuits or drytops are mandatory. Ask us about rentals if you do not own these items. Notes:
