Beneath the surface, the seabed extends in a series of reefs and craggy pinnacles - the dive sites of Capo Vaticano. Reefs such as la Galea or Formicoli, the pinnacles Vadaro and Mantineo and the wreck "Vapuri", resting in some 30 Meters of water, are among the most interesting. While only the skeleton of the wreck remains, the particular clarity of the water and the glistening white bottom, as well as the quantities of large grouper and octopus, makes this a particularly exciting dive.
Crystal clear water - the prime characteristic of diving around Capo Vaticano - offers thirty meters of visibility, the norm in these waters. The dives are equally wonderful for experts and less experienced divers. Many of the classic dive sites, such as at Formicoli or Mantineo, are at moderate depth and are particularly suited to divers new to scuba, but also connoisseurs will be fascinated by the diversity and quantity of fish and invertebrates populating the labyrinth of rocky cracks and recesses.
Veteran divers can assuage their thirst for deep water along the Capo Vatican headlands where to bottom drops to considerable depths just a few hundred meters offshore. An undersea canyon stretches through the bay of Groticelle, which parallels Capo Vaticano, delimited by an undersea mountain range with a series of peaks dropping into profound depths. The most famous diving sites are:
1) S. Irene and Murenario
2) 'u Vapuri
3) Formicoli
4) Villa Marino
5) Orlata
6) Vadaro
7) Secca del Tono
8) Scoglio Mantineo
9) L'ancora
10) Scoglio della Galea
