Flowing through the steep Nantahala Gorge, the Nantahala River is an eight mile run full of Class II-III rapids.
Revered by the Cherokee Indians, who migrated to this region more than 1000 years ago, the serpentine Nantahala River is associated with creatures prominent in Cherokee legends. The word Nantahala itself means “middle sun” or “midday sun” in the Cherokee language (there are places alongside the river where the high cliffs shut out direct sunlight until noon).
A remote trout stream until 1942, at which time a hydroelectrical plant was built that guaranteed downstream releases, the Nantahala is today one of the most popular rivers in the U.S. For over thirty years the Nantahala River has been run by canoes, kayaks and rafts. The site of regional, national and international competitions — including the 1990 International Raft Rally, the Nantahala River is now enjoyed by nearly 250,000 people per year. With its crystal clear, Class II-III water, it is the perfect river to enjoy with family and friends.
The Nantahala River is not a one-trip-a-year river, but one that can be enjoyed over and over again. With four options available to chose from: guided trips, rental trips, guided ducky and rental duckys; there is a river trip available for all experience levels.
We take pride in working with you to make every trip you do with us an enjoyable one. You are not charged extra for our commitment to quality service and equipment. Our facility is well-located. Our staff is well-trained. Our guided raft trips are fully guided — meaning there is a guide in every raft. We use self-bailing rafts exclusively. And if you are on a ducky trip, you will be encouraged to wear a wet suit at no additional charge.
If you do not have experience on whitewater, are not familiar with the rapids on the Nantahala River, or if you will be rafting with children, a guided trip is recommended. Our guided trips are fully-guided, meaning we guarantee a guide in your raft. Our guides are trained professional, certified in CPR and first aid, and are committed to making sure you have a great time on the river.
The Nantahala is not a one-time affair! For more experienced river runners, options of self-guided raft trips or self-guided inflatable kayak/duckys are available for running the river again and again.
