Located just over the North Carolina/Tennessee border is the world-famous Ocoee River. The site of a series of TVA hydroelectric power plant dams, the Ocoee River was a dry riverbed from 1912-1978. Its famous wooden flume (which diverted the river water around the riverbed and into each power plant) was condemned in 1976, putting water back into the original riverbed.

Local whitewater enthusiasts, long imagining the potential of the Ocoee River, saw the opportunity as water again flowed down the riverbed. They organized together to form the Ocoee River Council to lobby for downstream releases. In 1984, an act of Congress made that dream possible. By the mid-1980ös, the Ocoee had hosted national and international slalom events and kayak rodeo championships. In 1996 the Olympic Slalom event put the Ocoee River on the international map.

The Middle Ocoee: An exciting Class III-IV, 4-1/2 mile continuous big water run. Roller coaster, big wave rapids with names like Double Trouble, Table Saw, Double Suck and Hell Hole makes this run too much fun! For experienced rafters and kayakers alike, this section is one of the most talked about runs.

The Upper Ocoee: In addition to the well-known Middle Ocoee, the Upper Ocoee — site of the 1996 Olympic Slalom course, is now open to the public on selective days of the summer. More remote than the Middle, the rapids are steeper, more pool-drop and carry such names as Humongous, Edge of the World, Roach Motel and Let’s Make a Deal.

What We Offer:

Ocoee Double Header: This is a full day of non-stop fun on the Middle Ocoee! The continuous, big water of the middle Ocoee goes by in a blur your first time down. So we use the first run as a warm-up. A break for a delicious picnic lunch along the river gives the group a chance to catch their breath before an exciting afternoon run.

What to Bring:

Come dressed in comfortable clothes for your drive. For your raft trip, plan on getting wet! Bring along a towel, shorts and/or a bathing suit and shoes for your raft trip. For cooler or rainy days, we provide paddling jackets for your comfort. Water-proof cameras are recommended for the trip. Our outfitters store offers a great selection of t-shirts, shorts, river gear and any last-minute items you may have left behind. Save time to browse in the store after you return from your trip.

Notes:
Trip cost includes transportation from our shop, lunch, and a fully-guided trip.
