Day Skipper Shorebased - A 45 hour course covering Coastal Navigation, Seamanship and Meteorology. It is recommended that you complete the shorebased component before completing the Day Skipper Practical. The course is divided into 2 modules that can be completed in any order but must be finished by September. (RYA Course Packs are updated on Sept 1st each year)
Previous Experience Required - None essential but a minimum of RYA Start Yachting practical recommended. Ability After Course – Background theoretical knowledge to skipper a small vessel in familiar waters by day.
This theoretical course is designed for beginner and intermediate level sailors. It is a comprehensive introduction to chart work, navigation, meteorology and the basics of seamanship. You will find this course invaluable if you want to learn how to navigate a coastline or make decisions on board. It is strongly recommended that you have completed this course prior to commencing the Day Skipper Practical Course.
Course Duration - 45 hours of classroom tuition which can be done in one of the following ways:
- Evening classes - Module 1: 6 weeks & Module 2 : 9 weeks at 3 hours a week
- Weekend classes – Module 1 : 2 weeks & Module 2: 3 weeks at 9 hours a week (one full day each weekend)
- 5 Day Intensive – 5 consecutive days
