Welcome to our small, dedicated dive center on the Pacific island of Yap. We cater to adventure travelers who want to experience the best that Yap has to offer. We strive for customer satisfaction while providing safe and exciting dive tours with some of Yap's most knowledgeable dive guides.
Our waterfront dive center is conveniently located in the town center of Colonia, a leisurely stroll from most of Yap's hotels. The dive center is located in the Marina Center, a waterfront facility featuring deep water dockage that's centrally located to most of Yap's hotels, restaurants and bars.
Yap is in the heart of Western Micronesia, in the vast Pacific Ocean, 800 miles east of the Philippines, 500 miles south of Guam, and 300 miles north of the Republic of Palau. History and traditions are rich here, island customs still practiced, and the diving is regarded by many as the best in the world.
Diving with our resident manta population is an almost daily occurrence, and the extraordinary diversity of walls and reefs that surround our isle is stunning. Very few people have seen this unique place. A magical, enchanting island that's waiting for you!
What makes us a different kind of dive center? Each of our boats takes only four divers plus an expert guide and skipper. That's right - only 4 divers per boat! Why do we do this? Because when diving in one of the world's best dive locations, divers don't want to see other people's fins, or get kicked, or have to come up because someone else is low on air. Diving from our four-passenger boats makes for a more personal dive experience.
We specialize in small groups, so you see the mantas and sharks up close, not a line of bubbles. We really know all of Yap's sites and we run our dive trips for maximum pleasure. Because if our staff is having fun, you're going to have a great time. Want proof? Check out our guest comments link at the bottom of this page. We're confident you'll be satisfied with us.
We take safety seriously, as any dive operator should. Our staff is trained in CPR and First Aid, and our boats are equipped with Oxygen, First Aid Kits, VHF Radios, Life Jackets, and Signal Flares. Our impeccable safety record is reassuring to our guests, and our unusually high "staff to customer ratio" makes for a memorable adventure, both above and below the surface.
Our gift shop has a selection of T-shirts, shorts and caps, and we offer a wide variety of diving equipment and accessories. From masks, snorkels and fins, to defog solution and straps, fish id cards, slates, and wetsuits, divers and snorkelers can usually find what they're looking for at Beyond The Reef.
We have a fully stocked rental department, including Aqualung regulators and bcd's, Deep See wetsuits, Suunto dive computers, masks, snorkels, fins, and Sealife Reefmaster 35mm cameras. So if you're traveling light, we have everything you need for a day on the water. And yes, our dive trips include the use of tanks and weight belts.
After the equipment is washed in our fresh water rinse tanks, our guests prefer to leave their equipment in our secure overnight equipment room. The next day we'll set up your equipment for you on the boat, so the only thing you need to think about in the morning is how you like your coffee! So come dive with us, and see what we're all about. We'll strive to make the most of your dive vacation.
Snorkeling
Snorkeling the shallow lagoons and bays of Yap open up the underwater world to both novice and advanced snorkelers. Depending on the clarity of the water, snorkelers can often see mantas, accompanying divers on the boat to the nutrient rich channels. Yap's deep channels provide a safe habitat for the mantas as they are being cleaned, and along the sides of these channels are prolific corals teeming with fluorescent reef fish with exotic names such as Moorish Idols and Long Nose Butterflyfish, Titan Triggerfish and Peacock Grouper. Pipefish are common too, and are in the Seahorse family. Giant clams are found as well, and starfish of many different colors and shapes.
The reef begins in only a few feet of water, sloping down in a field of live hard and soft corals. The inner lagoon is somewhat sheltered from the elements of nature, providing multiple sites to wander and explore.
We operate both "snorkelers only" trips, catering to novices and families that want to see the best areas with the maximum flexibility of schedules, and snorkel/dive adventure trips, where the snorkelers accompany the divers. These adventure trips are usually geared towards the more advanced skill level, as snorkelers often encounter the ocean waves and currents, but are more likely to come face to face with sharks, turtles, eagle rays, barracudas and the schooling pelagics found on the outer reef walls.
Our trips are conducted with safety in mind, but please let us know in advance which type of trip you would prefer. Depending on the tides and the visibility on any given day, the manta rays can be seen by everyone.
So come spend a day snorkeling with us and a whole new world will enchant you, gently floating on the surface as the underwater world passes by, oblivious of being watched from above. From the majestic manta rays to the sleeping sharks to the myriad of schooling reef fish, you're sure to see something new and exciting.
Deep Sea Fishing
Experience the thrills of deep sea fishing with us, Yap's oldest charter sport fishing fleet. We offer half day and full day charters, and schedule the departure times to ensure the biggest catch. Whether it's trolling for Wahoo or Tuna, casting for the mighty Trevally, or bottom fishing for fresh Grouper and Snapper, Beyond The Reef will take you to the action.
Don't know what to do on your last day in Yap? If you cannot dive because you're flying later in the day, why not try fishing? The half day trips, our most popular, usually result in a plentiful catch, enough for lunch or dinner for you and your friends. We have everything you need, and... it's all included in the price. We charge per person, too, making it an affordable apres-dive activity for the whole family.
Our daily half day and full day trips bring in a fine catch of Mahi-Mahi, Yellowfin and Skipjack Tuna, Wahoo, Barracuda, Rainbow Runner, Marlin, and Sailfish. Whether you're a novice angler or a seasoned pro, Beyond The Reef will take you to the fish. Trolling for the "big ones" can provide a dinner feast. Most of Yap's Restaurants will prepare your catch any way you like. An appetizer of sashimi, followed by a sampling of stir-fried fish with local vegetables, and topped off with a well-seasoned grilled fillet is the usual favorite.
We provide all tackle and equipment, including Penn and Daiwa rods and reels. Of course, anglers may use their own equipment, if they prefer. We do encourage "catch and release" for our casting charters, to protect this limited resource. Sport fishing with us - Don't miss out on the action!
