The best way to understand Tulamben is to suit up down by the river, spit in your mask, and follow the bottom out until you are under no more than three meters of water. Then pick up one of the round, fist-sized stones from the bottom.
The top of this stone will be covered by a scruffy, brownish turf of algae, with a few whitish streamers of hydroids mixed in (okay, your hand might itch a bit later, but don’t drop the stone just yet).
Along the sides there might be a bit of stony coral, like somebody stuck a piece of chewing gum to the rock, or even a branching colony the size of a lime. Then turn the rock over. The rock will have a whitish or orange patch of encrusting sponge, a bryozoan’s colony, and may be a small snail or chiton or nudibranch.
