In the Unicornio Azul, we are living and crossing the Sierra of the Cuchumatanes by horseback for more than ten years; today, we propose a circuit for non-riders and have selected in a short and intense trip, routes and sites out of the beaten paths. The lodging formula (farms and camping) will allow you to live the Sierra from “inside”.
This trip proposes a concentrated vision of the Sierra of the Cuchumatanes in its diversity, from summits of the municipalities of Chiantla and Todos Santos (3000-3800 m) to warm lands of the Huistas (800 ms), passing through different ethnic and linguistic areas. In order to allow a better approach to the region, it includes different activities (optional) attainable by any person normally fit and with a minimum of adventurous spirit.
Day 0 : Arrival to the Unicornio Azul, dinner and night.
Day 1 : Horse back riding for a first approach to the unusual nature of the plateau, before taking way in 4x4 towards the highest part of the Cuchumatanes. We will finish the ascent walking in a protected area and with spectacular views, before arriving to the camp for a deserved rest around the fire.
Day 2 : After the spectacular dawn on the volcanos range and the plateaux “down”, we will continue walking through this landscape outside the time. Soon, the car will take to us by roads very few used, with vertiginous views to the precipices. The region becomes coffee grower and the vegetation more tropical. The camp will be in hot lands on a beach of the Rio Azul.
Day 3 : Visit by foot of hidden cave paintings in the “dry thorny forest” characteristic of the region before continuing the trip towards the Hoyo Cimarrón: a mystery of the nature consisting of a cylindrical hole of 170 ms approximately of diameter and similar depth. The night will find us near the cheminea in the old and misterious house of a farm (basic installations)with an interesting history.
Day 4 : Last walk in the farm that keeps a small lake and some archaeological ruins, before returning to Huehuetenango where you will be able to spend the night or to take its correspondence for other destinations.
