This island on Canada's Atlantic coast, is the resting and feeding place for big Canadas on their spring and fall migrations. This is potato growing country ... and for every year a field is planted in potatoes ... the same field spends two years planted in grain. That amounts to about 200,000 acres of grain, and it's those grain fields that attract the birds each autumn, fresh from nesting grounds in Newfoundland and Labrador. These are birds that are never shot over until they get here.
Steve hunts in leased fields, strategically located on flyway routes between feeding fields and the shallow salt water bays where the birds settle. His fields are proven producers. The hunt begins in pre-dawn hours with shooting a legal half hour before sunrise.
The goose hunt usually ends by 3:00 pm, in time to reorganize for an evening duck hunt, if one is desired. Prince Edward Island offers superb duck hunting. Black ducks prevail, but there is also shooting on teal, widgeon, pintail and other puddlers; as well as late season shooting on sea ducks; old squaw, scoters, eiders and golden eye.
