These hunts for Sitka blacktail deer are 7 days and 7 nights, and have proven to be the best hunt length for this unique vessel based hunt. The season is late September and runs through early December.
Hunts begin in Kodiak on Saturday mornings with chartered flights directly to the boat located at the south end of Kodiak Island in the Olga Bay area, you will not lose hunting time by trying to boat to and from the hunting area in seas that often get rough, instead they keep the boat on site in protected waters and fly you to where the action is.
The boat is a 50' Delta Marine twin diesel vessel licensed for 34 passengers, however on these trips it is limited to six hunters. The vessel is equipped with 110v power, TV/VCR, stereo, state of the art electronics, a hot shower, diesel furnace, and amny other features added to make your hunt more enjoyable. It is constantly manned by two Coast Guard licensed masters, with years of experience in the area. Once on board you will be briefed about the boat and can get your gear stowed in the bunk room. After you are settled in they will issues licenses and tags and get in an afternoon hunt, go pull crab pots, or just take it easy the rest of the day.
The area offers a wide variety of hunting options from beach hunting to hiking into mountain saddles to stand hunting with a rifle or bow. The island supports over 100,000 deer and several mild winters in a row have populations at their highest levels in recent years. Days start off with a hearty breakfast then skiff transportation to that days chosen location. Hunters are usually dropped off in pairs with each pair given a hand held radio for safety or early pick up. You can enjoy a lunch packed for you in the field and look forward to a hot dinner that may include New York steak, BBQ ribs, baked ham, "Thanksgiving" turkey, and of course venison and all you can eat king crab!
The early weeks of the season offer salmon fishing. Duck hunting begins about the second week of October with many species of collector ducks available. Several color phases of fox are also abundant on the island. Whatever your desire, the staff is dedicated to providing the guests with a hunting adventure tailored to each individuals expectations and goals. Many hunters return year after year to experience the truly unique week once again. Saturday morning provides you with ample time for boxing your meat and capes in wax "airline" boxes available on board and packing your gear in time for an afternoon flight back to Kodiak.
