The reefs are healthy and offer a wide variety of marine life: everything from snappers, groupers, barracudas, turtles, stingrays and sharks. The archipelago of Los Roques is a paradise of secluded and, until now, unknown reefs alive with an exorbitant array of fish, pinnacles, and colors. Situated in a ring around a central lagoon and protected by two barrier reefs Los Roques National Park offers numerous dive spots to explore.
Key Dive Sites:
Madrisqui: Madrisqui is a great site to snap some beautiful photos of the contrast of hard and soft corals or to simply snorkel in the shallow waters. Here one can find great illustrations of orange sponges called elephant ears and a large quantity of sea anemones with lingering shrimp.
Noronqui: Noronqui is a beautiful dive locale, promising sightings of large groupers and rays loitering among the shipwrecks, underwater caves and canals. Under large slabs hidden in 25 feet of water, divers can also find sleeping tiger sharks and turtles.
La Piedra de la Guasa: Approximately one half mile from the hub of it all on Gran Roque is a rocky pinnacle all but 15 feet under the surface and reaching to 115 feet down through the depths surrounded by school of fish. One can find schools of small fish being chased by larger fish like Barracuda as well as Mackerek and Batatas swimming in heat amongst big Pelagic fauna, cup corals and sponges.
Solapa de Rabusqui: Known as a beginner to intermediate site only fifteen minutes from Gran Roque awaits a sea of surprises. This underwater cave formation typically houses giant groupers and some sharks in only 30 feet of water. The roof of the cave offers protection to smaller animals like shrimps, crab and small lobsters and along the bottom divers can find rock sharks sleeping in the small current flowing through the cave. A reef runs along the outside of the cave along toward the caye with myriad of marine life.
Cayo Sal: A set of three intermediate dive sites located west of Cayo Sal is a mini-wall swept by currents and extending down to 150 feet. Here divers can find a series of caves at 80-100 feet where spotted eagle rays and big cubera snapper are swimming amongst great sponges and purple polyps along the steep slopes.
Boca del Cote: At Boca del Cote lies a reef separated by two small islands. Some say the reef acts as a net, filtering the fish and nutrients escaping from the lagoon and because of this it is not uncommon to find numerous juvenile fish, including orange-spotted filefish, blennies and snapper.
Boca de Sebastopol: A rarely visited reef located to the south east lies one of the best dive spots. Here one can find sharks mating during the month of June. This is a wonderful dive site.
Dos Mosquises: Due to its proximity to the site of the biological research station it is not uncommon to spot turtles swimming or resting as well as King Conch amongst a wide variety of corals and other varieties of fish. This is an excellent dive site for night diving and the depths range from 35-180 feet.
