From the heart of New York's High Peaks to the shores of Lake Champlain we cover a lot of ground. We hike up the Ausable River and back, passing spectacular waterfalls along the way. We "find" Lost Pond and ramble on for sweeping views from Hurricane Mountain - among the best in this range! Visit John Brown's last resting place. Stroll around Lake Placid and see the Olympic Center. We also hike many other lower and less-visited peaks that afford spectacular views of the surrounding mountains.
We also explore seldom-visited Split Rock Mountain overlooking Lake Champlain - with a fine view of Vermont's Green Mountains visible to the east - and see the remains of old quarrying operations. Another superb walk is done on nearby Coon Mountain. Elevations range from lake level (200') to 3000'.
We stay at the Bark Eater Inn near Keene in the heart of the High Peaks.
