Travel with us and down this beautiful and historic New York river, as we walk trails and visit legendary sites that are part this scenic wonder of our nation.

We start in Hudson, a former New York state capital and whaling center, and explore the town down to the river overlook, passing one of the best collections of Federalist style architecture in the country.

Some of the places we'll visit are: Lindenwald, our eighth President, Martin Van Buren's home and National Historic Site; Olana, Hudson River landscape artist Frederic Edwin Church's house and trails; Clermont State Historic Site, the home of Robert Livingston home, the man who gave the oath of office for president to George Washington, and who sponsored Robert Fulton's first commercial steamboat on the river; Rhinebeck, with one the oldest hotels in America, The Beekman Arms; and Mills Mansion and Mills-Norrie State Park (a 988-acre parcel on the river).

There will be great hikes at many spots with views of the river throughout our journey.

We'll have lunch at the famous Culinary Institute of America; visit the Eleanor and Franklin D. Roosevelt's homes in Hyde Park, and walk from one to the other through preservation land; visit quaint Cold Spring on the river for a stunning view of the US Military Academy at West Point, a town that George Washington named for it's cold, refreshing springs; visit Garrison, where "Hello Dolly" was filmed; visit Washington Irving's home, Sunnyside, and hike the trails at Rockefeller State Park.

Next we'll travel on the west side of the river to tour the area around Bear Mountain; see New Paltz's old stone houses; do a walk at the naturalist John Burroughs' sanctuary "Slabsides"; before stopping for lunch in historic Kingston, and walking Saugerties' downtown.

There are so many more options to choose from.

We stay at inns or B&Bs, and dining is at the inns or at great area restaurants.
