Travel with us up and down this beautiful and historic New York river, as we walk trails and visit legendary sites that are part this scenic wonder of our nation.
We start in Rhinebeck, where we'll be staying at the historic Beekman Arms and Delamater Inn, then head north to Hudson, a former New York state capital and whaling center, and explore the town down to the river overlook, passing one of the best collections of Federalist style architecture in the country. Some of the places we'll visit are: Olana, Hudson River landscape artist Frederic Edwin Church's house and trails; Clermont State Historic Site, the home of Robert Livingston home, the man who gave the oath of office for president to George Washington, and who sponsored Robert Fulton's first commercial steamboat on the river; Mills Mansion and Mills-Norrie State Park (a 988-acre parcel on the river). We'll have lunch at the famous Culinary Institute of America; visit the Eleanor and Franklin D. Roosevelt's homes in Hyde Park; stay at a B&B downtown in quaint Cold Spring on the river for a stunning views of Storm King Mountain and the US Military Academy at West Point, a town that George Washington named for it's cold, refreshing springs; visit Garrison, where "Hello Dolly" was filmed; visit Washington Irving's home, Sunnyside; see the Van Cortlandt Manor House; and hike the trails at Rockefeller State Park; and visit The New Croton Dam, an amazing structure. Next we'll travel to the west side of the river to tour the New Windsor Cantonment National Historic Site and National Purple Heart Hall of Honor where Washington bid farewell to his troops; stroll through New Paltz's Huguenot Street old stone house district; visit naturalist John Burroughs' sanctuary "Slabsides"; see Kingston's old waterfront and historic old downtown; hike to the Mohonk Mountain House and overlook tower with great views of the Catskills and Shawangunks; see the remains of the Delaware & Hudson Canal; and visit old Saugerties' downtown and lighthouse. We'll be staying a great B&B with congenial hosts in High Falls. There will be great hikes at many spots with views of the river or Catskills throughout our journey and many more options to choose from, as well. Notes:
