It is located on the Mediterranean coast, between the mouths of the rivers Llobregat and Besòs. Barcelona first made headlines in 1992 when the Olympics were held there and since then it has never looked back. A lively city centre, busy port, fashionable shops, excellent restaurants and many wonderful architectural wonders are just a few of the reason why Barcelona became one of the most visited cities in Europe.
If you are wondering what to do in Barcelona then for tours you have any number of excellent attractions, The Picasso Museum, Gaudi's unfinished masterpiece La Sagrada Família Holy family and the magnificent Gothic Cathedral and more. Please ask for a quotation.
The Barri Gòtic ("Gothic Quarter" in Catalan) is the centre of the old city of Barcelona. Many of the buildings date from medieval times, some from as far back as the Roman settlement of Barcelona. Catalan modernism architecture (often known as Art Nouveau in the rest of Europe), developed between 1885 and 1950 and left an important legacy in Barcelona. A great number of these buildings are World Heritage Sites. Especially remarkable is the work of architect Antoni Gaudí, which can be seen throughout the city. His best known work is the immense but still unfinished church of the Sagrada Família Holy Family, which has been under construction since 1882, and is still financed by private donations. As of 2007, completion is planned for 2026.
Barcelona won the 1999 RIBA Royal Gold Medal for its architecture, the first (and as of 2007, only) time that the winner has been a city, and not an individual architect.
Architect and designer, Antoni Gaudí is the most internationally prestigious figure in Spanish architecture. Born in Reus, in Catalonia, he graduated in Barcelona in 1878 and Barcelona became the centre of his activities. One important aspect is his capacity as designer. This led him to create, in close collaboration with some of the very fine artisans of his time, all those elements making up architectural space - wrought iron, furniture, stained glass, sculptural work, mosaics, and ceramics and so on - within an organic concept of decoration and with the integration of these elements into the construction process.
The sea landscape was one of his most preferred inspirations.
Casa Batlló, Casa Milá (La Pedrera) with comprehensive exhibition to understand his work as an architect. Park Güell a colourful wonderland with Gaudí´s home.
At the Sagrada Familia or Holy Family, covering all periods of the architect, an emblem of Barcelona, we shall take advantage of the models on display to get a better understanding of the advanced (even by modern standards) structural solutions Gaudí developed.
