Barcelona first made headlines in 1992 when the Olympics were held there and since then it has never looked back. A lively city centre, busy port, fashionable shops, excellent restaurants and many wonderful architectural wonders are just a few of the reason why Barcelona became one of the most visited cities in Europe.
If you are wondering what to do in Barcelona then for tours you have any number of excellent attractions, The Picasso Museum, Gaudi's unfinished masterpiece La Sagrada Família Holy family and the magnificent Gothic Cathedral and more. Please ask for a quotation.
The Barri Gòtic ("Gothic Quarter" in Catalan) is the centre of the old city of Barcelona. Many of the buildings date from medieval times, some from as far back as the Roman settlement of Barcelona. Catalan modernism architecture (often known as Art Nouveau in the rest of Europe), developed between 1885 and 1950 and left an important legacy in Barcelona.
A great number of these buildings are World Heritage Sites. Especially remarkable is the work of architect Antoni Gaudí, which can be seen throughout the city. His best known work is the immense but still unfinished church of the Sagrada Família Holy Family, which has been under construction since 1882, and is still financed by private donations. As of 2007, completion is planned for 2026.
Barcelona won the 1999 RIBA Royal Gold Medal for its architecture, the first (and as of 2007, only) time that the winner has been a city, and not an individual architect.
Joan Miró was born in Barcelona. Miró subject was the real world. He found suggestive forms in the shapes of nature, the sun, the moon, the stars. He developed a very personal language, a representation of sings and symbols based on a poetic inspiration. He left a great number of works: paintings, sculptures, drawings, collages, ceramics, prints and tapestries. He create also the Miró Foundation built by this friend the international known architect Josep Lluís Sert based on the tradition of the Mediterranean architecture. It holds Miró´s Permanent Collection and shows temporary exhibitions of leading contemporary artists.
The Picasso Museum is housed in five medieval palaces from the XIVth century in Barcelona. It holds a very unique and impressive collection of Picasso´s formative years as an artist. Picasso creator of Cubism with George Braque continued to innovate and explore new ways in painting, sculpture, etching, drawing and ceramics. An extensive exhibition of his work can be seen at the Permanent Collection with the highlight of Las Meninas series on Velazquez famous painting. The Picasso Museum has also a program of temporary exhibitions around contemporary artists with Picasso.
