Instructor Bio: Since 1988, Rick Cummings’ fine art work has focused on using the camera to capture light, form and composition to challenge our perceptions of reality and photography as an art form. His fine art approach to photography has become an important aspect to his commercial work. A great teacher, he has helped many students of all levels in his classes to develop their creativity, eye for composition, sense of light, shadow and line, whether shooting portraits, human form or exotic locations.
Rick has shown his work in many galleries including the Dairy Center for the Arts (Boulder), the Aperture Gallery (Denver), Rembrandt Yard (Boulder), Eclectic Gallery (Denver), Edge Gallery / Colorado Photographic Arts Center, “Best of Show 2009” (Denver) and numerous shows at his studio in Boulder Colorado. Rick also runs the Body Form Photo Workshoop in Boulder Colorado.
Supplies to Bring: You are welcome to bring whatever camera you like, digital, film or both. Digital is great for review work from the same day. If you are shooting digital you may want to bring a laptop computer or large storage device and lots of memory cards. Note that film processing may be limited and is an extra cost. Keep in mind that medium format and large format film may not be able to be processed as quickly as 35mm. You may also want to bring a tripod, even a small table top tripod would be good (Bogen makes an excellent one). Bring clothing for warm to hot days and cool evenings. Pack some comfortable shoes for walking.
Itinerary: (Rated: physical walking requirements are moderate to light). This workshop takes place the Umbrian countryside for seven days, where we will photograph nude models in a variety of settings, including vineyards, ruins, old stone buildings and the lush countryside with the beautiful Italian light. Each day consists of a morning shoot, work review, classes and an afternoon shoot. There will also be time for you to discover Umbria on your own. Of course there will be fantastic meals.
The highlight will be a day trip to Rome, home of some of the world’s most important works of art. We will see how great artists, such as Bernini, Raphael and Michelangelo, have interpreted the human form throughout history. We will photograph sculptures and fountains at night to gain inspiration. There will be a clothed shoot in Rome.
