Tutor Ben Russell takes you to outstanding locations in south west Ireland, to fast-track your understanding of your camera and your ability to take superb photos. He'll provide a mix of tuition built around your requirements and your equipment. This would usually include a mix of skills-coaching and photo analysis, with hands-on picture taking.
The content of the workshop is geared entirely to your needs and interests, and can include:
- A review of the basics of exposure — aperture, shutter speed and ISO
- Composition — view angle, focal length, subject placement etc
- Depth of field — how to isolate subjects or focus from near to infinity
- Filters - polarizing and graduated
- Shooting in aperture priority — A or Av setting
- Shooting with raw format, and raw development
- Cataloging, storing and backing up images
Ben's teaching is supported by Olympus, and open to users of all camera brands. An Olympus DSLR or SuperZoom camera can be borrowed for the day for a small fee.
Ben Russell is a patient and experienced teacher. Very aware of individual needs and abilities, he likes to pitch his tutoring at the perfect level for each of his students, whether complete beginners or knowledgeable photographers.
As an editorial photographer Ben has had several thousand photographs published. Also a skilled woodworker and sculptor, he lives on an organic small-holding with his writer and gardener wife, Joyce.
Bantry is a picturesque little market town on Ireland's south west Atlantic coast. With a backdrop of rugged mountains, and miles of unspoilt coastline, West Cork is a nature-lover's paradise. Visitors can enjoy local artisan food, golf, sailing, fishing, whale watching, hill-walking, horse-riding, music, cinema, and a perfectly poured pint of Guinness at the end of the day.
West Cork's mix of coast and mountain scenery is ideal for landscape photography. Other suggestions include a Georgian mansion and its gardens, at sea watching whales and dolphins, or Glengarriff harbour including a boat trip to the Italian gardens of Garnish Island.
Ben can suggest suitable locations, or work with your choice. He'll take you to a comfortable hotel or superb photo location anywhere in the Bantry area. If you have a specific location in mind that's further afield, Ben can take you, or meet you there (a small additional travel fee may apply).
