Our one-week painting holiday is an intensive introduction to a method of painting handed down from the French Impressionists to such American painters as Sargent, Olinsky, Henri, Brackman, and Schultz. During the first 12 hours of instruction (Monday and Tuesday) Jerry Fresia will provide a demonstration of the method which breaks down the painting process into stages.
Then students will be walked through the method so that by end of class on Tuesday each student will have painted two still lives in the studio using this method. In the remaining 13 hours (Wednesday through Friday) students will continue with the method and choose whether or not to continue painting in the studio or work en plein-air (outside) on the villa's garden or terrace, along the walk-way which borders the lake, or in the village of Lenno.
This is a complete, structured, step-by-step method that includes both the "mechanics" of painting or craft and the philosophy of painting as developed by the French Impressionists. The method, however, is intended to function somewhat as training wheels in that its purpose is to enable the student to express him or herself fully. The entire course, and then some, is contained in a book written by Jerry Fresia, which can be reviewed here. All levels of experience are welcome even the absolute raw beginner.
Jerry Fresia received a PhD in Political Science from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst and has taught at numerous US colleges and universities. He left academia in 1989 and settled in San Francisco to pursue a career in painting, which he has studied throughout his life, primarily in the studio of William Schultz. In San Francisco he was an exhibitor and Executive Director of two outdoor art exhibition groups. He has written extensively on both art as well as the political-economy of the United States. He writes a blog called "The Art Class".
Students can take a ferry and visit Bellagio, Menaggio, Como and other towns on the lake. Bellagio and Como are especially good for shopping and you will find inexpensive silk products, which is a big industry on the lake. Villa and garden tours are available, and a visit to Villa Balbianello in Lenno is highly recommended. For those with extra days, group tours to St. Moritz, Lake Maggiore, Lake Orta, etc. are available thru a local travel agent. For the active travelers, walking and hiking trails abound as well as all sorts of water sports. Cost for any of these activities is separate from the workshop fee.
The painting holidays are held at an 18th century villa in Lenno, which is located in the central part of Lake Como. The villa is directly on the lake and conveniently located close to restaurants, hotels, bus/ferry stops, food shops, banks, etc. With a spacious garden and terrace that have a fantastic view of the lake and Italian alps, students can enjoy a relaxing and inspiring holiday steeped in elegance and old-world ambiance.
Lodging and transportation costs are not included in the workshop fee, but information and assistance with reservation are provided. There are 3 lodging options that we recommend in Lenno and room rates for one person range from €60 - €125. A private transfer from/to Malpensa airport, which is the nearest airport to Lenno, costs € 110 one-way. If you wish to take public transportation to Lenno, we can provide detailed directions.
