Improve your language skills for academic study, conversation, business and career needs. Six levels of high-quality English classes are offered, from beginner to advanced. Some students may be stronger in some aspects of English than in others, the TIES program allows you to enroll in each type of course at the level which is most appropriate for you. Example: A student could take advanced level reading and writing courses + intermediate level speaking and pronunciation courses. Class times are from 0830 to 1030 and again from 1100 - 1300 Monday through to Friday with 20 hours instruction per week.

The minimum age for these classes is 16 while the average age is 25. All classes at TIES have a maximum of 8 students to ensure that the instructor can spend quality time with each student. The classes are student-centred, which means that you won't spend all your time listening to the instructor; you will be engaged in language-learning activities with your fellow students. Classes include New Headway English, the top selling general English course in the world, a series of core courses that are the foundation of our general English program. Students select their other ESL and academic courses based upon their academic and personal goals. Students receive a TIES certificate according to their program of study at the end of their course. Detailed reports are given at the end of each term.

All new students take the TIES English Language Assessment Test at the beginning of the each term to determine their English ability in listening, speaking, reading and writing. There will also be a short written assessment and an interview.

Faculty Information:
New Headway English (NHE) is the foundation course in the general English program and is taken by each student. The course material consists of four components: listening, speaking, reading, and writing. There are six levels of NHE. There is more than just class work in NHE: field trips and recreational activities add to the students' learning.

Speaking and Listening:

This course develops the student's conversational and listening abilities. Class work includes small group work, presentations, drama, and many other interactive activities.

Pronunciation:

The students will spend their class time in small tutorials with a language teacher focussing on their individual needs, improving their understanding and pronunciation of spoken English. The course covers all the basic sounds of English which the student may be having difficulty with, and the second level goes beyond the basic sounds to include intonation patterns of the language.

Grammar:

This course is designed to help students improve their grammar by analysing the structures, which will enable students to improve in both formal written and informal spoken English. This course is extremely popular having been developed by the Director.

Writing:

The emphasis in this course is to develop writing ability for academic purposes. Students in the beginning level will concentrate on basic sentence structure, and as the students move up through the levels they will begin to develop paragraphs and essays.

Reading:

Students will begin by developing basic vocabulary and comprehension skills. Advanced levels will prepare students for college-level studies. The textbooks used range from picture dictionaries for the basic reading course to a complete English novel at the advanced level.

Other Activities:
The campus of TIES is located in Somerset West, a small picturesque residential town about 48 kilometres from Cape Town, the premier tourism destination in South Africa. Somerset West has Mountains, Sea, Vineyards, and a pleasant town atmosphere all blessed with 39 weeks of summer annually.
