At the heart of this retreat is the combination of Hatha Yoga, Meditation, and Creative Writing. Patricia, Charles and their numerous students have found this combination to be very powerful. The Yoga serves to energize participants and creates a sense of physical well-being, while bringing them back to their body and their senses.
Each Yoga class ends with a deep guided relaxation which calms the mind and relaxes students into a creative Alpha brainwave pattern. Then we write, often flow of consciousness, with out editing or filtering. Then we gather in small, intimate groups and anyone who wishes to, reads what they have written.
Beginning and experienced writers alike will find a supportive, encouraging context in which to write from their deepest selves.
The most important aspect of the schedule is that all yoga, writing workshops, and even meals are optional and should be considered free time. We often have a writer who chooses not to participate in the yoga, or a yoga student who chooses not to participate in the writing component. This retreat is for the participants to make of it what they want and need.
Faculty Information:
This workshop is designed to help you shift your awareness and write from those deeper levels of consciousness. Through Hatha Yoga we will get in touch with our kinesthetic sense of self. We will use special meditation techniques to slow the mind and create and sustain a sense of the sacred throughout the retreat. A variety of special exercises utilizing tactile, visual, auditory, kinesthetic and olfactory "prompts" will help us reach deeply held images, and we will learn how to use Mind Mapping & Clustering techniques to generate, associate and manipulate ideas and information in new ways.
Other Activities:
Hatha Yoga Classes are scheduled 3 times a day: a wake up yoga class before breakfast; a more vigorous class to work up an appetite for lunch; and specialized hatha yoga workshops before dinner. All classes and workshops are optional for students. Over 8 days we also cover several different styles of meditation.
Most Classes are taught outdoors on one of the three terraces pictured at left. Students love to be outside and the weather is ideal. Rain is almost unknown at this time of year, and the temperatures are consistently between the low 60's at night to highs in the low 80's during the day. The Los Naranjos gardens make an ideal setting for out door Yoga and Meditation classes.
Facility Information:
Our retreats are held in the village of Yelapa, at Los Naranjos Retreat Center. Yelapa is a small fishing village at the southern end of Banderas Bay. It is cut off by mountains so there are no electric lines or roads connecting the village with the modern world. The only access is by boat or the trail over the mountains by mule.
Yelapa is set in an Indian reserve and has strict laws to protect the rights and livelihoods of the original inhabitants... five extended families.
