TAKE A TRANSFORMATIVE JOURNEY that will send you home ultimately as a more confident, versatile, and persistent writer. The journey begins with re-membering your body as part of your creative process. What happens when we write with embodied wonder? What happens to our stories and poems when Yoga awakens our outward perception and inner gaze, our deep imagination & our deep wonder? We’ll find the yogic means to heighten our creative faculties, heed intuitive insight, venture into creative complexity, and listen to that great voice within.
Whether you are writing a memoir, simply percolating your creative curiosity, writing poetry, writing songs & music, teaching students the art of writing, developing a scholarly book, drafting a novel, re-shaping your short stories, this retreat - THE JOURNEY FROM THE CENTER TO THE PAGE - welcomes you. Seasoned & fresh writers alike attend these retreats and mutually benefit. Absolutely no yoga background is required. The yoga is adaptable for every body.
We'll move, sit, write, sketch, and explore the outdoors. We'll study the works & words of well-known poets, memoirists, and fiction writers; create some more; and share. We'll leave with new writing, new views, and new friends.
Included:
- comfortable & tasteful shared lodging (only a few private rooms available at extra cost)
- delicious vegetarian (and vegan by request) breakfast, lunch, & dinner catered
- all materials including daily readings & a special "JOURNEY BAG"
- discounts on private 30-minute coaching sessions and manuscript evaluations with Jeff Davis
Faculty Information:
Center To Page Director Jeff Davis has been a writer and creative writing teacher for over twenty years. He is author of The Journey from the Center to the Page (Penguin hardcover 2004; Penguin paperback 2005) and the poetry collection City Reservoir (Barnburner Press 1998). Jeff understands how to create a safe space for writers of all backgrounds that lets them delve into their process and hone their craft.
Other Activities:
Each morning will include a half hour of lucid yoga, appropriate for anybody (& any body) plus a two-hour to two-and-a-half-hour session that will blend yoga tools with writing experiences. Activities also will lead us outdoors to awaken the several facets of our vision and our capacity for re-vision as writers and artists. This retreat is open to writers of writing backgrounds and yoga backgrounds. The movements are adaptable to anyone including writers who prefer to sit in chairs.
Facility Information:
THE LIFEBRIDGE SANCTUARY is the place in the Hudson Valley to retreat for deep creativity, reflection, and inspiration. Barbara L. Valocore co-founded The Lifebridge Foundation with her father, Paul M. Hancock, in 1992. Barbara oversaw the design and construction of the 12,000 square-foot eco-built Sanctuary in 2005. It houses groups affiliated with the United Nations, creativity, and visionary decision-making. All design appointments are simple, graceful, and mindful. We will have the Sanctuary and the 95 acres of paths, cliffs, woods, and ponds to ourselves.
Our regular meeting room with be what we fondly call the "Ark Room," a spacious third-floor room surrounded by windows and doorways outward. But you also will find nooks in the library, the courtyard, and other secret corners for your own practice and writing.
A generously sized kitchen and dining room allow us plenty of room to nourish ourselves and convene with convivial meals. You also may bring your own food and snacks should you have special needs.
Available lodging rooms will vary according to retreat size, but register early to get your favorite room.
We will be very mindful about pairing you off with other writers. We'll put night owls with night owls, the quiet ones with quiet ones, and so forth. A few private rooms will be available at an extra cost, but previous participants with roommates usually leave with a new friend.
