Martial Arts or Wushu, have been created and developed for self-defense and survival throughout human history. Correct Chinese Wushu training improves physical ability, health and willpower. It gives an individual an excellent method of exercise, a personal art form, a competitive sport and a basis for self-defense and sparring.

Total martial training includes Ti (kicking), Da (punching), Shuai (throwing), Na (controlling), Gi (hitting), Ci (thrusting), etc. Related to each style are basic forms, or sequences, which may involve defense strategies, offense, retreat, mobility and immobility, speed and slowness, hard or soft postures, emptiness and fullness, with or without weapons.

Wushu (literally, "martial methods") was historically termed "Wu-Yi" or martial arts. Fairly recently, the Chinese government changed the term to "Guoshu," or "national method". The term most popular in North America is "Kung-fu" which actually means one's ability in any skill, not necessarily martial.

The current government allocated large sums for funds to restore the Monastery. Now the halls, pavilions and corridors have regained their former grandure. Above the front gate hangs a sign in Emperor Kang Xi's handwriting: "Shaolin Monastery" In front of the entrance gate is a pair of stone lions.

Entering the gate, one sees two rows of stone tablets including one presented by Japanese monk Shao Yuan, one by Zong Daochen, founder of the Shaolin Boxing Association , and one by Chen Pei from Wahlum Society of the United States.

In the second, third and fourth courtyards are the heavenly King Hall, the Daxiong Hall the scripture depository. The abbot's room is in the fifth courtyard. Emperor Qian Long stayed a night there when he came to visit Mt. Song, thus the room is also called "Dragon Hall."

There is a pavilion that has a story: Monk Hui Ke stood deep in the snow outside the cave in which Monk Bodhidharma sat in deep meditation. The young monk pleaded to be taken as the sage's disciple. The old monk said, "Not until the heaven makes the snow red." Monk Hui Ke cut off one of his arms and the blood dyed the snow red. Later he succeeded Monk Bodhidharma as the abbot. This pavilion was built to commemorate his devotion.

In 1982, a feature film “Shaolin Temple” was released on the mainland, in Hong Kong, Macao and abroad. (Through this movie, Jet Li reached his stardom) Due to its popularity the number of visitors to Shaolin Monastery to learn Wushuu or sightseeing increases day by day.

Wushu teaching schools have been set up. In 1985, there were more than forty of them, with students from 20 provinces, municipalities and autonomous regions. In early 1986, the county government combined the schools into five in order to guarantee their quality.

In the past several years, many students from these schools have gone on to join professional Wushu teams or sports colleges, and some have become coaches of Wushu teams on other provinces and cities.

Coaches and students took part in the making of the films of "Shaolin boy", "Kapok Kasaya," "Shaolin Children Wushu", "Yang Family Army" and others. They have received Wushu delegations from the United States, Japan and Italy, and held over 500 shows of Wushu demonstration.

Shaolin Wushu got its name from the Shaolin Monastery, and the temple became famous for Shaolin Wushu. Today both the Buddhist sanctuary and Wushu from Shaolin are riding high.
