In 1982, a feature film “Shaolin Temple” was released on the mainland, in Hong Kong, Macao and abroad. (Through this movie, Jet Li reached his stardom) Due to its popularity the number of visitors to Shaolin Monastery to learn Wushuu or sightseeing increases day by day. Wushu teaching schools have been set up.
In 1985, there were more than forty of them, with students from 20 provinces, municipalities and autonomous regions. In early 1986, the county government combined the schools into five in order to guarantee their quality.
In the past several years, many students from these schools have gone on to join professional Wushu teams or sports colleges, and some have become coaches of Wushu teams on other provinces and cities.
Coaches and students took part in the making of the films of "Shaolin boy", "Kapok Kasaya", "Shaolin Children Wushu", "Yang Family Army" and others. They have received Wushu delegations from the United States, Japan and Italy, and held over 500 shows of Wushu demonstration.
Shaolin Wushu got its name from the Shaolin Monastery, and the temple became famous for Shaolin Wushu. Today both the Buddhist sanctuary and Wushu from Shaolin are riding high.
