Maiolica Decorative Painting - Ceramic Workshops Affordable (May 25 to June 1, 2008)
The Ceramic Workshop is for anyone who loves Italian pottery and would like to learn the process of Maiolica Painting in a 5-day workshop. If you have a lust for life and a curiosity for culture, we invite you to explore Medieval Fondi. Immerse yourself in our world of adventure, learn Italian Maiolica from a Master Artist who sells his beautiful pottery throughout Italy and international.
The Candidate for this Workshop must love Italian ceramics, explore off-the-beaten-path, live with the locals, sleep in simple accommodations, and have an adventurous spirit. The Medieval Adventure Workshop is for people who are looking to experience how Italians live day-to-day in a small Medieval Town, explore hundreds of narrow cobblestone pathways, Medieval Castle, ruins, and discover the mystery of Fondi.
Lodging in a Palazzo-Hostel built on Ancient Roman Walls along the Appian Way in the Historical Center, everything walking distance: shops, restaurants, markets, etc. The Palazzo is simply furnished with 2 terraces, 2 balconies, 3 kitchens, 6 bedrooms, 3 bathrooms, on 4-levels without elevator (not suitable for the disabled).
The Workshop Hostel is for students who want to learn the techniques of Italian Maiolica and at the same time, live with the locals in a Medieval Town. Ceramic Workshop includes instructions, demonstrations, individual evaluation, ceramic bisque-ware, glazes and firing. Classes are small; this is intentional which enables the instructor to spend more time with each student and assess each of their specific needs. The beautiful Italian ceramics has attracted artists for centuries.
The Ceramic Studio is located in a neighboring town of Formia about 30-min down the old Appian Way (312 BC), passing the City of Itri with another fantastic Medieval Castle, and the Tomb of Cicero (43 BC) in Formia. The studio will supply all glazes, ceramic bisque-ware, firing and workshop lunches. Students must supply their own brushes.
We offer other consecutive workshop-sessions in Cooking, Italian Conversational, Plein Air Painting for those students who would like to stay longer and have weekends free to explore Rome, Vatican, Naples, Florence, surrounding Seaside Villages, and travel around Italy (there is no additional Hostel cost for weekend stay).
We also offer workshops in Plein Air Painting in two locations:
- South of Rome (March, May/June, October)
- Italian Riviera Hilllside (March, May, September).
Faculty Information:
Antonello Filosa: A Master Ceramic Artist and a full-time independent production artist who sells his ceramic wares throughout Italy and international. He studied and graduated from the prestigious Belle Arte in Italy. Antonello uses traditional Maiolica methods and decorates his wares with motifs from medieval and renaissance periods, as well as his own creations. His beautiful ceramics can be seen in private collections, businesses, restaurants, hotels and stores across the world.
Astrid Gotuzzo - Host - lived in Italy for 15 years, studied ceramic techniques and trained by a prominent Roman family, Paolelli, who’s been in the ceramic business for over 150 years. She studied at the University of Florence and apprenticed in Rome. She has traveled throughout the world acquiring different perspectives for the use of pottery and different manners in communicating traditions and stories onto ceramic wares.
Other Activities:
One-Day free to explore Rome or Naples. If for some reason, you want to wonder and explore the territory during painting days, you are welcomed to do so. This is a relax environment, our main concern is to ensure that our guests have the best experience.
Facility Information:
The Palazzo-Hostel was built on Ancient Roman Walls along the Appian Way in the Historical Center of Medieval Fondi. The town has its very own Castle and beautiful cobblestone streets throughout the city. Everything is walking distance… shops, restaurants, cafes, pizzeria, bars, supermarkets, bakery, ice cream (gelato) parlor, outside markets, post office, banks, ATM machines, internet place, bus stops, etc.
The Palazzo is very sunny, simply furnished, has 2 terraces, 2 balconies, 3 kitchens, 6 bedrooms, 3 bathrooms, a large living-room, on 4-levels without elevator (not suitable for the disabled). We provide linens and towels. The kitchen is for anyone who wants to eat at home. The main kitchen has a stove, oven, microwave, refrigerator, dishwasher, washing machine and opens up to a terrace for outside dinning.
