2008 Workshop Schedule:

- May 11-17, 2008 instructed by Calvin Liang. The focus of this workshop will be painting on location from direct observation. Each day we will visit new locations, enjoying different facets of the Andalucian country side and villages.

Calvin Liang will explain how plein air painting is critical in training the eye to better understand the concepts of composition, design and color harmony. He will address application, indication and manipulation of shape, edge, value and impressionistic color to indicate the outdoor landscape. Artists will be encouraged to simplify the subject matter through the use of basic design and drawing skills. Demonstrations and critiques are routine.

- May 25-31, 2008 instructed by Ray Roberts. There are 3 disciplines in painting; design, drawing, and color relationships. The ability to coalesce all these in the short amount of time before the changing light is our challenge. Mindful of these disciplines allows us to identify and address each aspect of any given painting. Roberts has a direct approach for painting, beginning with the plan, analysis of your sketch in terms of design, measurement and accuracy of your sketch, and finally color relationships. At each step, the artist should be able to feel the direction of the painting and make appropriate changes as necessary. Ideally, a painting should look like a finished sketch at any given stage.

The workshop will address how to mindfully approach each painting following these aspects, and what pitfalls to be aware of when painting. Roberts will show specific exercises to address areas artists would like to improve. There will be daily demonstrations and lots of personal attention.

- June 15-21, 2008 instructed by Larry Moore. Painting is more than copying color for color; it's concept, drawing, color, design, line, form and brushwork. Painting is a series of decisions that should not just represent a place or an object or a time of day, it should ultimately represent the artist.

Larry Moore's workshops address not only the process of painting but the decisions involved in the act of making art. He covers all the fundamentals of painting on site and creative thinking skills with the primary goal of developing a better artist, a stronger voice.

- September 14-20, 2008 instructed by Jacobus Baas. This workshop will explore techniques for capturing momentary effects that create the sensation of light, color and movement. Jacobus will share his knowledge and techniques with a "hands-on" approach which includes demonstrations, individual instruction and mentoring, group discussions and critiques, painting, painting, painting!

Jacobus prefers a new and different subject for each painting session and will encourage participants to directly engage with nature, experiment, and above all enjoy the painting process. Nearly all instruction will take place "en plein air". Participants are welcome to stay during the last weekend to free-paint with the instructor.

- October 12-25, 2008 Instructed by Daud Akhriev (14 day workshop). In the Studio we will be painting the same composition over several days to create a good, finished still life and model. Subjects will be local models, 4-5 students per model, and regional themed still life. Outdoors we will make repeat trips to a painting spot, probably three destinations, three days per spot.

- November 9-15, 2008 Instructed by Daniel E. Greene, N.A. This one week workshop will provide a foundation of fundamental and advanced professional information upon which to build art skills. The information will repeatedly help artists successfully paint portraits and landscapes back in their own studio and en plein air.

This is a well-organized, carefully integrated period of extensive study beginning with a 7:00pm Sunday demonstration by Mr. Greene on the professional techniques of painting a portrait in oil-detailed on how to begin and how to proceed-step by step.

Monday through Friday artist work six hours a day, split into two sessions, under the constant personal direction of Daniel Greene. Instruction and critiques, personal and general are given by Mr. Greene, All day, every day, covering information on every phase of portraiture. Mr. Greene's teaching is designed to help artists improve their ability to express themselves and enable them to strive to paint with the highest standard of artistic quality.

Regardless of their stage of development specific information is given to artists individually, guiding them through each phase of creating a painting. They learn how to proceed and what to think about, step-by-step, while painting a portrait or landscape.
