The last decade has seen a greater awareness of safer practice and tightening of Health and Safety legislation. Etching is a hazardous procedure, requiring the use of mordants, resists and solvents, which are harmful by inhalation, ingestion or through the skin. Etching materials should also be subjected to special waste disposal, as they may pollute the environment.
This course wants to point out that, at this stage, there is no such thing as non-toxic intaglio, but researches must be made and artists should be aware of what they are using and what alternatives they have. The workshop will give equal emphasis to concept and technique, testing on different metals the action of different mordants (both acids and salts) as well as the resist capacity of different organic and inorganic grounds. All the test plates will be printed and analyzed. Some previous experience of etching would be useful.
