Photography has always been closely linked to printmaking, since its advent printmakers have been charmed by the possibilities offered by the new medium and have been conducting pioneering experiments, applying photosensitive gelatins onto plates. Photographic engraving, halftone screen engraving, photo gravure were only a few of the several ingenious late XIX century intaglio techniques related to photographic procedures.
In the XX century the development of photo mechanical transfer media sadly fed the market of fake artworks and, more in general, found the most banal applications. For these reason photo-etching is often excluded by what is considered to be an original work of graphic art. Yet, it is impossible to deny that photographic and digital processes are playing a vital role in contemporary printmaking.
This workshop will introduce a range of transfer media, from the simplest to the most advanced, and above all will introduce the practice of the solar plate and of the latest photo polymer media (water-washable plates), which are known and appreciated for being the latest non-toxic discovery.
