Tutor Ben Russell has chosen some outstanding locations in south west Ireland, for his digital photography workshops. The emphasis is on seeing and taking superb photos, while developing an understanding of the basic principals of photography. Expect a mix of tuition, presentations and photo analysis, with out-door picture taking sessions, making full use of the fabulous surroundings. The content of the workshop is geared to the participants needs and interests, and usually covers:
- a review of the basics of exposure — aperture, shutter speed and ISO
- composition — view angle, focal length, subject placement etc
- depth of field — how to isolate subjects or focus from near to infinity
- filters - polarizing and graduated
- shooting in aperture priority — A or Av setting
- shooting with raw format, and raw development
- cataloging, storing and backing up images.

Workshops are run in association with Olympus, and open to users of all camera brands. One-day workshops are also available for inexperienced photographers, and individual tuition can be arranged.

Faculty Information:
A founder member of the Hands-On network of art and craft teachers, Ben Russell is an experienced teacher of both photography and his other passion, woodcarving. As an editorial photographer he has had several thousand photographs published. He lives on an organic small-holding, with his writer and gardener wife, Joyce.

Bantry is a picturesque little market town on Ireland's south west Atlantic coast. With a backdrop of rugged mountains, and miles of unspoilt coastline, West Cork is a nature-lover's paradise. Visitors can enjoy local artisan food, golf, sailing, fishing, whale watching, hill-walking, horse-riding, music, a 3-screen cinema, and a perfectly poured pint of Guinness at the end of the day.

Facility Information:
The workshops take place in a variety of sublime locations. Gougane Barra Hotel in West Cork has a fabulous mountain-fringed lakeside setting, beside the site of St Finbarr's ancient oratory. Ballymaloe House in East Cork is surrounded by beautiful gardens and home to a world renowned cookery school. Each location serves delectable meals, and refreshments are provided.

Course fee is 80 Euro, payable on arrival. Group rate, for 4 or more, 75 Euro each. Refreshments are provided and lunch is available at the venue. An Olympus digital SLR can be hired for the day.
