Annette Merker
I read German Studies, History and Sinology (Chinese Studies) at university. As part of my Chinese studies I lived in the Peoples’ Republic of China from September 1991 until February 1994, on a grant from the DAAD. During this time I studied Chinese language and literature at Beijing University, and taught German at the Goethe-Institute in Beijing. Whilst majoring in Chinese studies I participated in a research project at the Free University (FU) of Berlin, looking at the Republican period in China (1911-1949).
In addition I was a student assistant in the East-Asian Seminar Library at the FU from 1995 to ’98 and worked occasionally in the vacations as a tour guide in the PRC and in Hong Kong. I have been working as Director of Studies and German Teacher at our Language-Institute since January 1999. In addition to my teaching work, I am also responsible for coordinating the courses and the teaching team, as well as taking part in designing and undertaking various projects in the Institute.

I studied Sinology and German Studies, and I have been teaching German as a Foreign Language since 1990 at various language schools in Germany. I have many years’ experience of teaching at all levels. I have taught at elementary, intermediate and advanced level, and have prepared foreign learners for the various language examinations (ZDaF, ZMP, DSH, KDS). In 1991 I worked as a German teacher in Anhui University in Hefei (PR China). Here, one of my responsibilities was to prepare students for the ZDaF examination. Since 1999 I have been working as GFL (German as a Foreign Language) teacher at our Language-Institute, where, alongside intensive teaching work, I am particularly involved in developing teaching materials.
