Program Details:
During this week you will be immersed in painting in this luch area across the bay from Naples. You will explore and experiment with various tools, materials and subject matter, training your eye while stretching your technique. There will be considerable structure during group sessions where we will work on drawing as the foundation for our compositions.
There will also be plenty of independent time to work. We will work in the classroom and around the gardens of the villa where we are staying; the other studio is Sorrento itself: cafes, the sea,, architecture and squares where we will work to capture the incredible light and color of this ancient seaside resort. Individual instruction is stressed as well as individual and group critiques.

Setting and Accommodations:
One of the most interesting parts of this program is where we will be staying. Villa Romano, a 17th century palazzo in Piano di Sorrento, is still owned by the original family who will be our hosts. Filled with family antiques and artwork, the villa conveys a sense of living the noble life in the south a century ago. There are 3 kitchens, a working pizza oven and a rooftop terrace. The dining room opens out onto a large private garden and the whole house revolves around a traditional large open central courtyard. The entire home will be reserved for our group and we will live there for the week like a family. The villa is 10 minutes from the center of Sorrento and across the bay from Naples. All rooms shared doubles. Four shared modern bathrooms.
The area of Sorrento is one of the most beautiful places in Italy. Just south of Naples and at the head of the Amalfi Coast and under the silhouette of Vesuvius, Sorrento is scenically stunning, rich in history and has the most sensual food and wine of all of Italy. We are centrally located across the bay from Naples, near the Roman Emperors' retreat of Capri, the archaeological cities of Pompeii and Herculaneum, the beach resorts of Positano and Amalfi and Ravello - the sky high repose of the rich and famous. There will be ample time during the week for exploring the area independently. All of these places mentioned are easily accessible by local transportation.
