Kunisaki Heritage Temples tour circles the Kunisaki Peninsula by Bike and on foot. It is a no-nonsense, economical and environmentally sound vacation choice. The price is reasonable and the people friendly. All the important points are observed; good food, good routes and good accomodations.
Tour Itinerary:
After arrival in Beppu, Kyushu Island of Japan;
Day 1: After some orientation, start in Yamaga town with a moderate hike on an old pilgrimage trail. The terrain alternates from quasi-jungle to cliff-side and ridge-top, and takes 4 to 5 hours to complete.
Afterward, a short bike-ride to the Usa Jingu shrine, hot spring baths, and our lodging.
Day 2: Beginning with a bike ride of 15 lumpy kilometers to the stone cliff carvings of Kumano, then a 3 hour hike across Nokogiri ridge trail. After lunch on the trail, we ride bikes to our accommodations, a hot spring Ryokan.
Day 3 : Another morning bike ride, about 20 kilometers, and then hike a spectacular trail called Nakayama-Senkyo. Afterward we will ride to Kunimi town, by the sea. Satoh's Buddha carving gallery is where we stay.
Day 4: We take it easy in the morning, with a visit to quaint Himeshima island. In the afternoon we ride or hike to the old Monjusen temple. Monjusen temple has been in use for hundreds of years and it is a very memorable place.
We eat traditional temple-fare, and sleep at the temple.
There is Zen meditation at day-break, if you would like to do that.
Day 5: We do make a hike in the morning, skirt Futago mountain to Futago temple, and then after lunch, ride bikes to Yamaga, about 30 km.
Total bike distance is 100km. It is a bit lumpy.
Total hike distance is approx 20 km.
