Ecuador has a wonderful range of foods and we hope that everybody has a chance to enjoy all of it. But as they say “Good things come to those who wait.“ People who travel to South America from countries abroad need to give their bodies time to get used to both the food and the water of Ecuador.
It is recommended that travelers coming to Ecuador drink strictly bottled water. It will take your system quite a while to get used to the water here and a bad reaction can lead to a serious upset stomach and illness.
It is recommended that for the first couple weeks travelers should try and avoid:
- Raw food, especially vegetables like lettuce
- Street food
- Red Meat
- Juices.
Although following these warnings will help prevent the majority of stomach problems, remember that almost everyone traveling to Ecuador will have an upset stomach at one point or another. This should not worry you. If the problem continues, it is always a good idea to consult a physician.
And of course your body should get used to all of these foods with time, so please enjoy!
