Ecuador is one of the safest countries in Latin America; however, it is important that all travelers take certain precautions in order to insure their safety at all times.
Most of the foreign travelers here in Ecuador are easily distinguished from locals. This is something to keep in mind because it can make you an easy target for thieves and pickpockets.
While in the city, it is important to carry only the necessary items. For example do not carry an excess of money, electronics or anything that would be targeted by thieves. Cameras are especially expensive in Ecuador and are commonly a target item here. Do not carry your original passport with you. The best idea is to make a copy of your passport and leave the original at home or in your hotel.
Buses are normally safe within the city, although they tend to be a little more dangerous in Guayaquil. Buses between cities are safe for travel as long as you watch your bags. Never put your bags in the overhead compartments or out of sight. They have been stolen while passengers have been on board.
In Quito, the Trolleybus is known for its robberies. The best way to avoid this is to carry your bags in front of you at all times. Do not carry loose money in your pockets. It is much better to carry all of your money and important documents in a money belt around your waist, neck or leg.
Walking at night is not recommended, especially in cities such as Quito and Guayaquil. The majority of reported robberies have targeted travelers walking alone at night. It is better to walk in groups at all times and is highly recommended to take taxis after 6:00 pm.
Sundays tend to be much more relaxed than the other days of the week. Most of the stores are closed and there are fewer people in the street. We recommend that students go out in pairs or groups during both light and dark hours of Sunday due to the reduced amount of people on the street.
