Riga - A Magical City in the Baltics!

Just like Jodie in this story, when hearing about Latvia or any other ex-Soviet Union country, I would ask: “Why would I go to any of these weird countries?” Not so after reading this. Riga is worth visiting: a beautiful medieval old town sprinkled with ultra-modern constructions and backed up with a very rich history.

Riga is a stunning place. We travelled there for Christmas in 2005 and absolutely loved it, especially as it snowed. The Old town is beautiful and filled with cobbled roads and hidden alleys. There was a lovely Christmas market with traditional gifts sandwiched in between two beautiful churches. All of the restaurants were fantastic too.

The buildings are stunning, go anywhere and the architecture will astound you. It is so old...... opposite the palace is a building with gargoyles gaurding the entrance.

One street is closed off to traffic and is a row of yellow shops - very quaint and lovely with all the lights. At the end is a basement coffee shop that did the most wonderful hot chocolate.

The park was a delight too, with lanterns and coloured stars in the trees, little frozen duck ponds and the bridges over little rivers. The railings of these bridges were covered in padlocks and we watched a wedding party have photos taken and put one of these engraved padlocks onto the railings.

We never felt intimidated at all, we didn't really go into the bars or clubs, just ate in very friendly and good priced restaurants. On Christmas day the whole family was out..... the place was filled and you saw grandma to grandchild all out enjoying themselves. To me this is how Christmas should be!

I would wholeheartedly recommend it - even more magical in the snow.

Nice story about my hometown-though in my mind it's not the best time of the year to come to Riga-my personally fave is late autumn-October, when here's planty of beautiful red-golden-orange trees in our's simply breathtaking!!! that time of the year you can go to Sigulda-a place about an hour by train from Riga, where one can really enjoy as we say "Latvian golden autumn"!!!:)

Everything looks and sounds about right, it really is very nice here. Although it's 2007 now - the prices have risen quite a bit, due to the large inflation rate lately..

Actually, i think, best time to visit Riga is Summer. I like Riga and all Latvia in any season, but for tourists ithink Summer is better. And you can visit not just Riga, when it's summer, but manu other places- and you'll find, it's not just Riga to see in Latvia :)
You are welcome :)

I haven't been to Latvia, but I have been to other former Soviet Union countries, and I was surprised to see that they are all quite similar: good-looking young women, former churches transformed into markets during the regime, relatively cheap prices.
anyway, what is Karum? is it some kind of desert?

Really nice to hear so great story about my country, well actually about Riga..
As a latvian, i could say that almost every single word was true
but i would like to add that not always we have so cold weather. If you're willing to come in summer, teperature can be also +30 C (80-90 F)
well, but if you really want to go to Latvia in winter I REALLY SUGGEST to visit not only the capital city Riga but also SIGULDA - it's one of the most beautiful places in Latvia. To say truethfully, the nature there is amazing(NOT only in winter)
All I'm saying is that Riga is just a small peace of pure Latvian beauty..
so in conclusion:
As a patriot of my country LATVIA (p.s. it's NOT Russia: thats for everyone who doesn't konw it) I really suggest to visit it.

What is Riga? On this question i can give you an answer. You ask how? I live, work and i have been born in Riga. It's one of the most beautiful places in the World. It is place with history, tradition and unique nature. It is nice that people can tell great story about capital city of Latvia. But on this articl is just one problem... not only Riga is thet beautiful places with history, tradition and unique nature but all country is like Riga. In Latvia are 4 area and in each of then are something with who can dissever them. There is one language but on each 4 aren people talk different. In eache aren are differetn history, tradition and nature. In one place there is full of lake, on other place there is many lands and rivers. Yes that is write what saying by Anonymous. But it is one part of Latvia... Riga. If you whant to know better this beautiful country you need go and look all 4 area in all 4 season because in aeche season not only Riga but all my country change. And believe or not... it is fantastical.
So if you what see someting unseen.. lets go on Riga. And then you can say "I have seen all."

I like countries where you can have snow in the winter and sunny wether in the summer. Is it that hot in the summer, because the previous anonymous said it can be up to +30C?

Well, I myself live in Riga and was really glad to read such a nice story about our capital city. I have to say that most of the written is truth except the prices that have risen quite dramatically in the past two years. Riga is no longer the cheap entertainment city and there is absolutely NO way you can get in taxi from the airport to the center for 5 lats!
Also, I would suggest coming to Riga in the summer, it's really fantastic here then (like now, it's 32 degrees Celsium outside). But don't just stay in Riga, go to Jurmala (it's the resort city by the sea), Sigulda at least. Actually traveling all around the country during the summer is a great experiance.
So - come and visit Latvia! :)

It's a really good place to visit. there is a lot to do and things to see. the people seem to be nice enough. But i've been there a lot of times and there are places and things that I like that many others wouldn't find so interesting.

If you go you should try and use the trams. it's a great way to see the city. the city, by the way, is more than just the Old Town. But that's beautiful as well.

Don't forget to go to Jurmala and the western coast (Kliepada, I spelled that wrong!) as well.

It's great that girls had a wonderful time in Riga, but I should note that Riga is marvelous in Spring, Summer and Fall too and it would be completely different experience. Martins is right - there are many many places to go and see in Latvia and not only Riga, everyone can find something interesting and very special.
Only spoiler might be that the prices have gone up a bit and I guess it's due to the increase of number of tourists. And it's very common now in Summer hear many different languages and local people accept and tolerate that.
My suggestion for the future visitors would be that they read the Riga travel guides before they travel as there is information about almost everything and gives VERY useful information about the city and the country.
