| Vietnam |
| Submitted by bindero on 2007-03-23 05:29:25 (via towerofbabel.com) |
| How much do we know about Vietnam? It’s an undeveloped third world country, there was a war with the US, and there were communists here. Pretty controversial mixture of cultures and mentalities. Well, this article relates a bit about this mixture. Reading it, I felt like reading about a fallen, depressed Empire.

From what I have read so far, it seems like Vietnam is similar to any other East Asian countries.
How come the Imperial City wasn't damaged during the war? |

Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City (Saigon) are the largest cities. Saigon's population is almost 10 million, over 10% of the country's total population.
Most of Ho Chi Minh City is similar to China, but a poorer version. The city is very dirty, and the rivers and canals are basically open sewage than runs to the ocean. The large population and third world waste management systems are reasons for this uncleanliness.
But many advantages exist for touring Vietnam as a whole. The average cost of anything in Vietnam is 1/5 the cost of American retail, and even cheaper if it is local Vietnamese products. I eat a large portion of rice and beef here, with a Vietnamese coffee, for under $2. (And since coffee and rice are staple foods for the country, it is the best you will ever enjoy.) If you a tourist, expect to pay a whopping $3 or $4 for a large meal at fine dining or a bar. You can find almost any kind of food here as well since it's a big tourist city.
I have several Vietnamese friends who are tour guides. It is cheap to travel and see all the things there are to see. From the monuments and palaces in the city, to the beautiful contryside, there is history everywhere. Also, there are over 50 tribes in the country, many still nomadic. You will see some of these tribes if you travel anywhere outside the city.
The countryside and beaches are comparable only to those of the Thai islands. Where population is still minimal, nature is most beautiful. Dalat City, 5 hours from Siagon by bus, is known for its annual Flower Festival. Flowers grow naturally, and without cultivation. So, you can find many gardens and arberetums there. I'm going there in a few weeks for vacation myself.
Okay.... enough for now. |
