| Two Windows on Korea |
| Submitted by Adele on 2007-05-04 10:10:36 (via www.biz2web.com) |
| Who would have thought that the Daewoo and Hyundai workers in Korea are going on demonstrations, while the rest of the world enjoys the comfort of their products? And who would think Korea is so fascinating, and its people - so sweet?..

Well, sounds similar to the experience I had. I went in early April 2007, and spent the entire time in Seoul. I think the highlights of the trip was food, and the many street markets that we saw.
It was also interesting how clean it was there. No graffiti, and very little street trash. However, it was very difficult to find a trash can anywhere. The children walk to school, and do so alone or in small groups, seeing as crime is very low, and there are police cars at a lot of the busy intersection. This is probably due to the amount of accidents that Koreans get into. Just be prepared for the crazy driving, such as wrong way on one ways, and no stopping for stoplights/no turn signals. It is nice to see that there is no road rage. They just honk, and go on their way. |

When I was there, it seemed to me like there was way too much noise during the nights. Are South-Korean nocturnal or it was just me who experienced it? |

woah ppl know so much about Korea:P I know some ppl in Korea drive like crazy, but I wanna say that's not all of the country. Many foreign ppl visit Korea and they enjoy the ' Korean atmosphere ' :) I think it's very interesting to visit Korea, since even it is to me, who's totally Korean :) I recommend you to visit Insadong, there are alot of traditional stuff of Korea. |

I am a Korean, who lived in Ulsan for 14 years, and went to Bulgaria for 4 years, and came back. I have been to the places that the travel logue explains several times. (Ulsan is 1 hour drive distance from Kyongjoo)
I should say that things in the travelogue is very true, although it's not the only things in Korea. And... the demonstration and protests are generally temporary thing. I bet it would be really hard to see those things if you come to Korea. However, I should agree that those things are perhaps more frequent here than other nations. Maybe somewhat into Korean culture as the travelogue said.
Kyongjoo's beautiful cherry blossom is my favorite view in Korea... it's really similar to what I think the Heaven would be. But it's quite temporary. It lasts about a week every year. Generally about second week of April. The best way to enjoy it is to wake up extremely early, like 4 am, before sun-rise, and slowly drive along the road. As sun rises, you will see Cherry blossom flying everywhere around you in an empty road. Pink trees till the end of the road.
Since the logue is little old (2001) things are little different in Korea. Especially political ideas that they wrote here is not what everybody thinks here. Plus, Won is kinda appreciated currently that it will be disadvantage for foriegners using US $ or Euro. (opposite situation than 2001)
Korea is generally clean, extremely low crime rate, and crazy traffic especially in Seoul. Never drive in Seoul. But not many people speak English or any other language else than Korean. Road signs generally have English too, but it might be in different spelling than you know of. (Korean letters can be written in English by several ways...)
... Hmmm. kinda too much info I guess. Anyway, I love S.Korea myself. I love travel here even though I am a Korean who have lived here most of my life :) I am thinking of gonig Jeju (popular tourist island) next week. and Gwangjoo (historical place... a place where a massacre happened under dictatorship in 80s.) for next month :D |

I would definately say that for the most part, the things mentioned in the travelogue are true. As someone else has already mentioned, those demonstrations are only temporary. Korean culture is unique from other asian countries. Tourists that visit there will find that there are very nice and hospitable people. I find korea to be a very beautiful country in its own right. |

It does sound like Korea, expecially where it says that Korea is a country that holds most of it's traditional past close to it's heart and that the streets are FLOODED with traffic. A lot of Koreans are pround to be Korean as anyone would be of their heratige. The song that plays as you read the article is actually a Korean Folk song called Ah-Li-Lang. |
