City Trip Lisbon

“Lisbon is very much aware of its own beauty. In every high lying place you find a miradouro with a great view of the city. And there is much to see. Moreover, Lisbon has a lively nightlife with restaurants, cafés and extraordinary old coffeehouses”. The look of the city is defined by trams dating for the XX century, museum pieces themselves.

This is a great article. Thank you for sharing. Lisbon overwhelms me with it's rich architecture and the way it's ornated - such intricate work. Castelo São Jorge at night is simply astounding. YOu can stay and watch it loosing sense of time...

As I remember Spain is faimous for its modern buildings, but the old are impressive enough.

Hey cleo,
Indeed Spain and Portugal have much in common regarding architecture, still I like that every city has some distinctive element that make them so special. From this point of view I like the trams in Lisbon, I believe that they give uniqueness to Lisbon.

Has someone had tram trips in Lisbon?

Hello to those that would love a trip to my favorite city, Lisboa.
I have been to this city to visit family and tour many times. The best way to see all of the wonderous sights is on foot with the help of a fantastic subway system.
This article discusses so many of the sights that are worthwhile seeing. The night life is also an experience to behold.
The Lisboa zoo is a terrific way to spend a day. Shows at the aquarium involve the audience. There is a skytram that will also take you over the sights of the zoo. I had a fantastic time.
If you love to shop, Lisboa has a 5 story shopping mall as well as many fantastic shops.
This article has outdone itself in describing the sights and things to do in Lisboa. By the way, I have taken a tram ride...Great fun.

Very good article!
it's like you have known Lisbon for a long time.
Apart of some meaningless wrong spelled names ("Praça do Comercio" is the correct form) you sumarize very well what is Lisbon and its main attractions.
Of course there are lots of things, that could be there (like Parque das Nações, Docas, etc) but next time you must visit Lisbon in June (more precisely in the 12th June), to watch a unique feast in the World: the feast of Saint Anthony (festas de Santo António): in the night of 12 to 13th June Old Lisbon celebrates its famous Saint, Anthony.(born in Lisbon in the XII century and died in Padua, Italy)In the old and typical quarters, specially Alfama, all the streets are decorated with paper lanterns, people gather in open air, to dance, eat (delicious sardines, grilled peppers, and drink lot of wine) and dance to the sound of "marchas populares" (popular marches, nothing to do with military lol).
It's the portuguese St. Valentines day, because st Anthony is the also the saint for love causes and marriages.

I was born in Lisbon in 1983 and I´m proud of it, because it´s one of the most beautiful cities in the world.
If someone asked me to discribet,I would have to say that Lisboa is a mixture of Old and New. It´s incredible how this 2 mix in our City. There are monuments to visit everiwhere but it also have all the things we need to live a modern life.
I recomend everybody to visit it.

Lisboa is a beautiful city, full of life and tradition. Fore everyone that likes history and museums, nightlife and shopping this is the right place to go.

I list just a few places that I think is relevant for anyone who is interested to come here (by the way I´m from Lisboa).

- Centro de Arte Moderna - Fundação Calouste Gulbenkian

- Museu de Arte Antiga

- Museu Aquário Vasco da Gama - this museum is in Dafundo, the best way to go there is to take the train from Cais do Sodré to Algês.

- Museu da Cidade

- Museu da Marioneta - Traditional puppets from all over the world

- Museu de Arte Popular

- Museu de Marinha - This is in Belém, it is really worth it to go to this area, because you´ll see the
Mosteiro dos Jerónimos,
Centro Cultural de Belém,
Padrão dos Descobrimentos,
Torre de Belém,
you can have a nice walk to the Tropical Garden and the garden that is in front of the monastry, and don´t forget to try the famous and delicious pasteis de Belém.

- Museu Nacional do Azulejo - A vast collection of ceramic tiles.

- Nightlife is great in Bairro Alto and in Docas de Santos.

- Alfama for some more nightlife and the right place to hear Fado (traditional national portuguese music)- Madredeus, Mariza and Amália Rodrigues are big icons of Fado.

- Parque das Nações - The Expo98

- For shopping: Baixa of Lisboa, Shopping Centres: Colombo, Vasco da Gama, Almada, Amoreiras.

- If you are into festivals, during summertime we have a lot of concerts, and not just only in the Lisboa area but from north to south the country too.

- Don´t forget to travel at least once on the old trams, go to the "Elevador de Santa Justa" in Baixa of Lisboa.

All year round is always a good time to visit Lisboa. But for those who suffer with the heat, than August is not the best time, and for the ones that suffer with the cold, than January and February are not good either.

And while you are is Lisboa you should also visit Sintra, Cascais, Ericeira and Estoril.

Have a lovely journey.
Love from Lisboa Portugal.
